Notes for John Colson:
John Colson lived during the period in American history when France and England were competing for control of the continent. In the period between 1689 and 1763, France and England fought four wars. At stake in North America were not merely the teeming fisheries and rich fur trade, but future control of the vast, as yet largely unexplored, riches of the continent. The four periods of Franco-English fighting followed a similar pattern. The first phase of these wars, the French would induce their Indian allies to attack the English settlers. These were called the Indian Wars by the colonists, but history records them as King William's War, Queen Ann's War, King George's War and the French and Indian War. John served as a soldier during King George's War, (1744-1748) and according to an account of Col. Thomas Vinson, son of John's sister Sarah (Colson) Vinson, writing about his mother's family, he states;

"John Colson was killed about sunrise on a Sunday morning, being a sentinel on the walls at the fort at Old York in Maine. He was shot by a skulking Indian, the ball passing through his neck, cutting the life vein. He lived about two hours."

After the death of John, Deborah married Akerman Petingill, probably in August of 1749. Records show they filed intents to marry in Bridgwater, Abington and East Bridge.

The information about Deborah Sprague [daughter of William and Silence Sprague]
marrying John Colson comes from Sprague, Warren Vincent. "Sprague Families in America". Rutland, Vt: The Tuttle Company, Printer, 1913. page 581 where W. V. Sprague says:

"No. 247, pp. 146, 147. Deborah Sprague who m. (1) Jan. 30, 1733, John Colson and m. (2) 1749, Akerman Pettingill and went to Maine, was without much doubt the dau. of William Sprague, No. 247."

Just to clarify, No. 247 William Sprague was the husband of Silence Tower and the son of William (No. 231), the son of William (No. 226) the immigrant and brother of Ralph and Richard Sprague.

W. V. Sprague was prone to not list sources in many cases so I have no idea where he derived the opinion that Deborah was the daughter of William but he was apparently well convinced. [Richard E. (Dick) Weber, 45 Knollwood Way Platteville, WI 53818-3731; letter dated April 15, 2000]

After the death of John Colson, Deborah married Akerman Petingill, probably in Aug. 1749. Records show they filed intents to marry in Bridgewater, Abington and East Bridge

There is one other Deborah Sprague that was born in the correct time to possibly be John Colson's wife, that being [Brøderbund World Family Tree Vol. I #5059 and Vol. VII. #3995:] Sprague, Deborah b. 02-04-1712; dau. of Ephram and Deborah (Woodworth) Sprague. of Duxbury, MA and Lebanon, CT.

CAPT. EPHRAIM' SPRAGUE b. March. 15, 1685, Duxbury, Mass.; d. 1754 in Lebanon, Conn.; m. (1) Deborah Woodworth, dau. of Benjamin. He m. (2) Mary who survived him. His will-probated Dec. 9, 1754, mentions wife Mary, sons Pekg and Perez; daughter Betty who married Abel Bingham, daughter Irene, wife of Nathaniel Wright, grandsons Ephraim and Theodorus, granddaughters Abigail and Deborah. (Windham Probate, iv, 466.) In this will, there is no mention of his daughter Deborah, b. 02 Apr. 1712 indicating she had probably died prior to 1754. We know that Deborah Sprague that married John Colson was still living and married to Akerman Pettingell in 1754.

There is a question as to the identity of Ebenezer Colson who married Vashti Thayer 17-06-1762. Was he the son of Thomas and Mary (Bolter) Colson, or the son of Lt. Ebenezer Colson. G.W. Chamberlain states that Ebenezer Colson, son of Thomas married Vashti Thayer, but he also states that Ebenezer died young. The Vital Records of Weymouth, to 1850 list Ebenezer Colson Jr. as marring Vashti Thayer. This probably being the son of Lt. Ebenezer Colson who was Chr'nd in October of 1758 and probably born much earlier.
