J. H. COMER, OF CENTER, SECOND WHITE CHILD BORN IN HOWARD COUNTY, NOW 82 YEARS OF AGE

To J. H. Comer, of Center, for years was given the distinction of being the first white child born in the territory now known as Howard County.
Mr. Comer, at the age of eighty-two, said yesterday that he understood that another person proved priority to the claim.
"But I was at least the second," he said.
Mr. Comer was born a short distance west of New London and with the exception of a few years spent in Kansas, has lived in and near Howard County all his life. From the New London vicinity his parents, James and Mary (Wright) Comer moved to the edge of the present site of Nevada, just over the line in Tipton county. The father was a minister of the New-light church. J. H. Comer then was six years old and he remembers that several sections of land around Nevada was Indian territory and that many redskins lived there.

Built Crude Log Cabin

"When we arrived in the vicinity of Nevada, my father found that all the land set aside by the government had been taken except eighty acres," he said. "on this land we settled, my father building a crude log cabin about twelve by sixteen feet in size. Later he built a hewed log house that was regarded as on of the finest in this region. We lived at Nevada only about two years, moving at the end of that period to a place near Hemlock, which by the way, was originally named Terre Hall. The town of Center likewise was named Tampico, and these early-day names may still be found on deeds to real estate.
"Seventy-six years ago, at the time the Comer family lived there, Nevada did not have a real name," Mr. Comer said. "The north side of Mud creek was known as "pluck 'em in" and the south side as "pluck 'em out". In explanation of these names, if such they may be called, Mr. Comer said that men living on the south bank were accustomed to visit a saloon on the north bank and that frequently they fell in the stream on the way home and had to be pulled out. Hence the side on which they fell in became known as "pluck 'em in," and the opposite side as "pluck 'em out."

Indians Were Peaceable

Indians hunted and fished throughout the territory, but they were peaceable, Mr. Comer said, although as a boy he frequently became frightened at sight of them. Deer, wolves, bears and other wild animals made life uncomfortable and sometimes unsafe, Mr. Comer said.
Mr. Comer's parents thought when they lived at New London that it would some day be the metropolis of this region, Mr. Comer said. His mother and the father of Isaac Wright, former mayor of Kokomo, were brother and sister. Mr. and Mrs. James Comer had eight children of whom J.H. Comer is the eldest. The other children are Will, of East Taylor Street, Kokomo; Nixon, who lives near Jerome, Linville, judge of the county court at Tampa, Fla.; Dave, of Center; Mrs. Hepsia Hercules, the widow of Louis Hercules, and Mrs. Louisa Hollingsworth, the widow of Wilson Hollingsworth, both of Center, and Mrs. Mary Main, the wife of Mirah Main of Greentown. Another son and brother, Pryor, is deceased.

MARRIED 53 YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Comer were married December 6, 1872, in Kokomo. Mrs. Comer is seventy-nine years of age. They have five children. George and Robert, the sons, both live in Detroit and have prospered there. Three daughters all live in Kokomo. They are Olive, the wife of Levi Barrett; Mabel, the wife of Earl Stack, and Ruby, the wife of Rev. Everett Nixon. When Mrs. Comer suffered a broken shoulder in a fall late last year,
