DEATH OF W. H. COMER

MAN WHO KNEW KOKOMO FROM VILLAGE DAYS EXPIRES AT AGE OF 80

William Henry Comer, 80 years of age, living at 1009 East Mulberry Street, died shortly after midnight this morning from diseases incident to old age. The death was not unexpected as Mr. Comer had been sinking for several years.
Until the closing months of his life Mr. Comer retained his vitality in a marked degree and was able to get about and visit with friends. He loved to talk of the old days and he could do so interestingly and instructively. He knew Kokomo when it was a struggling village and familiar with New London when it had an underground railroad preceding the Civil War.
The deceased was a cousin of Isaac Wright, former mayor of Kokomo, and also of Dr. J. L. Puckett. He was also an uncle of Captain O.L. Main of the police force and had many other relatives in Kokomo and Howard County.
William Comer, fireman at No. 2 station, is a nephew and namesake. He was with his uncle and took care of him every night during his last illness.
The deceased was a member of a family of ten children, one of whom a sister, died in infancy. Then no more deaths occurred for half a century, the first to pass on being a brother, Prior Comer woo passed away in 1913.
Five of the brothers and three sisters are still living. The other brothers and sisters are: J.H. Comer of Center, the second white child born in Howard County; Nixon, who lives near Jerome; Linville, judge of the county court at Tampa Fla.; Dave, of Center; Mrs. Hepsie Hercules, the widow of Louis Hercules, and Mrs. Louisa Hollingsworth, the widow of Wilson Hollingsworth, both of Center, and Mrs. Mary Main, wife of Mariam Main of Greentown.
Mr. Comer was born near New London, April 6, 1845, and was the son of Rev. James Comer, the former a New Light Christian minister. Mr. Comere spent his entire life in this community. In recent years he became a resident of Kokomo.
The widow Rebecca Comer, survives him.
The funeral will be held at the Union Street Friends church Friday morning at 10:30 o'clock. The deceased was a member of this church.

NOTE: William H. Comer's tombstone is along the road near the southwest corner of the Old Friends Cemetery north of the church in New London, Howard Co., IN. It is simply inscribed - "WILLIAM H. COMER, 1845 - 1926". There is no stone or inscription on the Wm. H. stone for Rebecca, although the cemetery records indicate she is buried next to Wm. H.
