The Conde (Conlee Clan) The family name Conlee was first recorded as early as 1066 in Scotland and emerged in later years in the County of Monaghan and later migrated to Ireland. They were one of the four tribes of Tara and descended from Congal, a 10th century Chief of the southern Hy Nial. The evidence show's that the name, "Conlee", came about in several different ways resulting in unrelated families with similar names. When it became necessary to register a last name the "de" was dropped in English. For some it remained Conde, for others it became one of the various spellings of Conlee. These families might have no book ties, just a similar faith and history. At this time, I believe our line of Conlee's came from Scotland. Scot's who came to America with the French Hugonots to escape the religious persecusion. They came first to South Carolina, migrating west to MS,north to TN and KY. In the New world the Irish played an important part in building the nation, the railroads, coal mines, bridges and canals. They lent their culture to the arts, sciences, commerce, religion and the professionals. The Irish moved westward with wagon trains, and settled the mid west, some trekking over the Rockies to distant west coast.During the American War of ndependence some were loyal to the cause, joining the Irish Brigades. Others were loyal to the Crown, and moved north into Canada, becoming known as the United Empire Loyalists and being granted lands on the banks of the St. Lawrence and the Niagara Peninsula. The Pannell Clan In the western coast of Scotland and on the Hebrides islands the Pannell family was born among the ancient Dalriadan clans. Their name comes from the personal name Payne. Pannell is a patronymic surname, which belongs to the category of hereditary surnames. Although this interpretation of the etymology of the surname Pannell is uncertain, it is Scotland reveal the name Pannell to be a Norman surname that was introduced to the region some time after the the Norman conquest of England in the 11th century. The history of the name has since been woven into the tapestry of Scottish history and has become as much a part of the heritage of Scotland as much older Scottish names. Many Scottish families trace their origins to Normandy. Our Name, Pannell, occurred in many references along with the variations Pagan, Paganell, Paganel, Pagnell and these changes in spelling could occur often, even between father and son. Scribes recorded and spelled the name as it sounded, phonetically and it was not impossible for a person to be born with one spelling, married with another, and buried with yet another written on the headstone. Sometimes preferences for different spelling variations came from either a division in the family, religious reasons, or reasons of loyalty. The family motto. “Nec timeo nec sperno” Latin for “I neither fear nor despise” The movement of the people continued, beginning with the plantation of Protestant settlers in Ireland after the Reformation. Land was confiscated from the Catholic Irish and given to English and Scottish settlers for political reasons. The Scotch-Irish were a particular portion of this population that immigrated to Ireland known as the "Adventures for land in Ireland." They undertook to maintain the Protestant faith within their families and all those who worked for them. The name Pannell may well have arrived in Ireland early in the 17th century during the reign of James I of "Britian, when six counties in Ulster were confiscated and settled by the Protestants "Planters" or "Undertakers," as these settlers were known.
