There is a family story that tells of Aunt Hannah carrying her big treadle sewing machine on her back across the Chicago river during the great Chicago fire in 1871. She is depicted on the Chicago fire centennial plate that mom illustrated for Marshall Field's.
Uncle Gene says that she "had a green thumb that extended all the way up to her shoulders!"
