Notes for J
OHN PALFREY:
Like many surnames, the name Palfrey tells of the profession of our forefathers. Palfrey comes from the name Palfrayman which is Old English for one who trains saddle horses. Our forefathers were horsemen who broke and trained horses for commerce and for war in ancient England and perhaps in the Norse countries as well.
The earliest ancestor I have found to date is John Palfrey of Henry County, Virginia. He was the father of the Revolutionary War soldier William Pelfrey. William came into Kentucky between 1800 and 1810. He settled in Morgan County in what at the time was Floyd County.
In the 1760 tax roll of Henry County, Virginia, John Palfrey is taxed for nine head of cattle and one horse. While William came westward to Kentucky, Joseph went south and founded a large family in Franklin County, Georgia. As far as I have yet discovered, the remainder of John's children lived out their lives in Virginia.
