He was a frieght agent for the Louisville and Nashville railroad. At the age of 16 he accepted a position with the L&N Railroad. He exibited marked ability and held several responsible position with the railroad. He was named for his father, even though he was the 2nd. son. At first, his dad said he didn't want a Jr. so his mother named the first son, Leroy Martin.
