Notes for Virgil Fairchild: Virgil was a moonshiner. Rosie sold Virgil's moonshine. By most accounts, Virgil was fairly successful at his craft. In order to get from Virgil's house to his still, you had to pass by a spring. He would often advise his customers to be careful that Rosie didn't cut the moonshine with the spring water as she brought it back from the still. I think he was kidding. |

Notes for Alta Fairchild: Aunt Alta, pronounced Altie, was by all accounts of her nieces and nephews, a very sweet woman. Her first marriage to Earl Conley produced a stillborn child. This was to be the only child Alta was to bear. Alta and Earl divorced and Alta lived as a single woman for many years. When Alta's mother Lucy was ill and in the hospital, she met a sweet talking gentleman named Charles Pelphrey. Charle's mother was in the hospital at the same time as Granny Lucy. Charles convinced Alta that he was very well to do ( it is told that Charles claimed to own a huge part of West Van Lear). In fact Charles probably had fewer means than Alta. In any event Charles and Alta were married. The most vivid memory I have of Aunt Alta was when I was 8 or 9 years old. My father, mother, sister, and myself took an overnight visit to see our aunts, uncles, and cousins in Nicholasville. If you wander why so many of our Fairchild clan ended up in Jessamine County, see notes for Dora Alice Fairchild. When we went to visit Alta and Charles, we found them to be living in a small apartment complex in downtown Nicholasville. As I remember it the apartment was about the size of my apartment when I attended UK, maybe four rooms. We were ready to leave and my father made the excuse that he was going to have to take us to a restaurant because the kids were getting hungry. Alta would have none of it. She sent Charles to a corner market and I went with him. To hear Charles tell it he was going to fix us a meal fit for a king. What he purchased was Polish sausage and eggs. There are very few meals in life you can honestly say you remember. Even though 25+ years have transpired, I can still remember my feast of Polish sausage, eggs, and milk in a tiny apartment in Nicholasville, Ky. One last note on Aunt Alta was the circumstance in which she died. My great uncle and her brother Virgil had just died. When Charles told Alta that Virgil had died, Alta had a stroke and died as well. I can remember that she and Virgil were at the funeral home at the same time and I can remember how I cried. Aunt Alta was a genuinely good woman. |

Notes for Earl Conley: Earl made moonshine. One day while coming down off the hill from checking his still, Earl had a heart attack and died. My father went with Earl's son Jack along with some other men and carried Earl's body down off the hill. |

Notes for Walter (Berry) Fairchild: Walter Fairchild will always be Uncle Berry to his many nieces and nephews. Uncle Berry worked as a miner and a deputy sheriff in the Johnson County Sheriff's Department. He once ran for Sheriff. His wife, Sarah recollected the days when Berry would play his guitar as his father, Levi joined in on the fiddle. Those must have been truly good days. Like Uncle Dock, Uncle Berry was known for the best of the Fairchild attributes. He was a genuinely kind and descent man. |
| ix. | Arthur Fairchild, born April 19, 1919. |
|
Notes for Arthur Fairchild: The most notable habit of Arthur is that he would get drunk and tell stories. The most famous of these is the story of how he killed the German. According to the tales that have been passed to me, Arthur was a cook in the Army during World War II. At the end of the war, Arthur's company was stationed in Germany. One day, for some unknown reason, a German man was in Uncle Arthur's barracks. Arthur was drunk and agitated. I doubt if he even knew why he shot and killed the man, but he did. He then threw the gun behind his locker. Whatever authorities were in charge of civil affairs investigated the murder. The gun was found behind Arthur's locker. In the mean time, Arthur was involved in another fight. He was beaten so badly that he had to be hospitalized. The authorizes tried to take Arthur into custody but his physician wouldn't release him. By the time Arthur was well, his unit was about to return to the United States. Arthur's physician released him to his company and he returned home. I could say more about Arthur, but it would only be hurtful and no benefit could come from it. |

Notes for Raymond Fairchild: According to all I have talked to who knew Raymond Fairchild, he was a good man. He had a cheerful disposition and was always joking and smiling. He was the apple of his mother's eye and dearly loved by his neices and nephews. Raymond was electrocuted to death while working on an electric pole during a lightning storm. |
