Ancestors of Alma Fairchild

Generation No. 3

      4. Asa J. Fairchild, born August 1838 in Rule Branch, Floyd Co., Ky.. He was the son of 8. Enoch Fairchild and 9. Frances Cantrell. He married 5. Sarah (Sally) Ratliff.

      5. Sarah (Sally) Ratliff, born March 1845 in Johnson Co., Ky.; died 1887 in Johnson Co., Ky.. She was the daughter of 10. Silas Ratliff and 11. Anna Spradlin.

Children of Asa Fairchild and Sarah Ratliff are:
  i.   John M. (John Acie) Fairchild, born August 16, 1864 in Johnson Co., Ky.; died March 29, 1957 in Johnson Co., Ky; married Pearlie Collins January 26, 1895; born January 1871 in Johnson Co., Ky.; died in Johnson Co., Ky..
Notes for John M. (John Acie) Fairchild:
Many of the descendants of John Acie Fairchild now live in abject poverty. This can partially be traced to his inheritance. Pearlie Collins, his wife, was a Mulengeon, a lost tribe of Saponi Indians prevalent in the Eastern United States. Due to their heritage the Mulengeon they bore Negroid features. John's father Acie (Asa) Fairchild was a fairly well to do farmer in the Barnett's Creek area of Johnson County. Acie never cared for John. Sarah was pregnant with John when she and Acie married and Acie often questioned whether John was his son. Folk who were alive to know both Acie and John Acie say they bore a remarkable resemblence to one another except that John was a small man, barely five foot tall. Acie was not at all sympathetic to John's love his cousin, Pearlie saying that no son of his would marry a "nigger". Upon Acie's death his money and lands were divided among Acie's children with the exception of John who received five dollars. By all accounts I have read and heard, Pearlie Collins was one of the finest cooks and most gracious people in my family's association.

  Notes for Pearlie Collins:
Pearlie was famous for her cooking and accordion playing.

Notes for James Milton Hitchcock:
James Milton and Celia (pronounced Ceelee) raised a rough bunch. This is evident in the untimely deaths of Leck, Add, and Son. My grandma Alma Fairchild Conley told of how the boys would often be in jail. Her grandma Celia would give her, Alma, money to take to the jail so the boys would have cigarette money.

ix.   Albert Adison (Add) Hitchcock, born September 1898 in Johnson Co., Ky.; died September 27, 1929 in Rockhouse Fork of Jennies Creek, Johnson Co., Ky,.
Notes for Albert Adison (Add) Hitchcock:
Add was pistol whipped to death by Harry Conley at a carnival in Paintsville, Ky. Add had roughed Harry up several times in their past. Add arrived drunk at the carnival. Harry asked Add to come over to where he was. To Add's surprise Henry began beating him with the butt of his pistol. Add was taken to his parents home. His death was witnessed by my Grandmother, Alma Fairchild. She related how angry Add was and that he could barely be restrained. As the effect of the alcohol subsided so did Add's life.
