Notes for G
EORGE HAMILTON WITTEN:
George Hamilton Witten or "Tiger" as he was more commonly known gained a fame which carries on to this day due to his valor in the Civil War. Although Tiger must have been in his 40's at the onset of the war. He left his position in the Kentucky State Legislature and volunteered for service in the Union Army. His most notable service occurred in the service of General William T. Sherman in his famous (or infamous depending on which side of the Mason/Dixon line you happen to call home) March to the sea.
Tiger fought at the battle of Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia. During that battle he lost his brother Frank to Confederate gunfire. He also recounted his adventures during the battle of Atlanta. It was his duty to evaded snipers as he made his way to Peachtree Creek to fill his unit's canteens.
During one battle, Tiger was carrying logs to build a battlement. The log was hit by a cannon ball killing the two men one the opposite end of the log and leaving Tiger with a prominent hump on his back which stayed with him the rest of his days.
When Tiger was in his nineties, he was overcome by a terrible head ache. He prayed for God to relieve his pain. The head ache went away and Tiger was baptized into the Church of Christ.
