Find Family

I am currently researching my 3rd generation ancestors that include the following surnames:Christensen, Crane, Congrove, Estrada, Ivie, Ramos, Sanford, Steele, Zuniga . Several branches are now documented in the LDS Family History Library. They include a partial Congrove file. A complete Sanford- Sandford- De Sandford- De Saunford file is established. Also a complete Christensen, Crane, Ivey-Ivie, Steele LDS Family History File is recorded. This page attempts to join all these existing files and complete the Congrove family history file as well. I am looking primarily for Congrove members. It is the least complete record I currently have todate. It is known that the Congrove surname is unique probably derived from Congreve or Congrave. Meaning is of Anglo-Saxon orgin Old English form is "Con" or comb, brush thicket or warren, grave-greve-is the Old English form for grove. The Change from greve-grave to grove began in in England in the Restoration Period about 1700's. I have found references that the name is derived from "conygreve" in meaning a warren or place for keeping, caring, and raising of rabbits. I have found no Congrove's, in the USA prior to 1700. This is true for England, as well. I have one ancestor CA 1804, interred as a Congreve, the main areas the name occurs is in Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, New York,Ohio, Oregon, Virgiania, West Virginia, Washington. It is my theory that the Congroves emmigrated into America, through Maryland, or New York. The orginal name must have been Congreve. There is several records of the Congreve's, in New York Colony, about 1690's. A Charles Congreve of New York Colony, owned the land that Fort West Point, sits on, and sold it to a farmer prior to the establishment as a fort. The same Charles Congreve was involved in a property dispute on Long Island, New York Colony. In Marylnad an Archibald Congrove (b. 1720) marries into a prominent Prince George, Maryland Family. By 1753. the Congrove, name appears in Virginia. The Congrove's, move about quite a great deal during and after the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War, War of 1812. I know they particpated in the Revolutionary War as patriots. They migrated to Ohio in the early 1820-30's. Meigs Co., Ross Co., Hocking Co.. My branch lived primarily in Meigs Co. Twp Olive. The use of William Congrove, or William Congreve, seemed to be quite popular in our family. I have talked to our British cousins and it appears the Congreve name is a very unique name there as well. The two William Congreve's one an inventor and the other an author that were cousins lived in the Restoration and Revolutionay War periods. The Congreve rocket designed by William Congreve, may have been a bit to close to the new patriots name for comfort. Since it was used in the War of 1812. That could have called for a name change. In England, the Congreve families, destinquished themselves in the military for many genearations since the William the Conqueror's time. In the South African War a Captain Congreve won the Victoria Cross. There were many Congreve's, that were officers. Sir William Congreve was a famous inventor, the Congreve: clock, rocket, artillery cannons, and "Congreve match". Are a few of his inventions. Lord William Congreve was the famous "Restoration Period", playwright. His plays "Way of the World", "The Old Bachelor" are studied even today. The common phrase, " Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned", is derived from one of Congreve's plays. I am told that these Congreve, individuals were all linked in some way. Perhaps our Congreve, or Congrove, ancestor came here as a British military soldier and stayed here and started a family. It is not known at this point. Your help and contribution will help complete the Congrove history in the Americas.
