Notes for STEPHEN ROADCAP: Stephen Roadcap (b. 1789 in Brocks Gap, Rockingham, Va.), is the son of Peter Roadcap II and Mary Lipp. Stephen married Mary A. and had the following children: Sarah A. Roadcap, Ann F. Roadcap, and Benjamin F. Roadcap as per Rothgeb website. It appears that this Stephen Roadcap migrated to Botetourt County, Va. He was not in Botetourt in 1840, but he was there by 1850. The following relationships are not clear. 1850 District 8, Botetourt County, Va., p. 144 (preprinted), 23 Sept 1850 dwelling 1423 Stephen Roadcap 60 Farmer $15,000 Va (all) Sarah A. Notes for JOSEPH ROADCAP: Joseph is listed as a son of Peter and Mary as per the Rothgeb website. NFR I do not find this Joseph Roadcap with any certainty anywhere in the census records. This Joseph Rothgeb below is close in age, but is said to be son of George Rothgeb and Anna Spitler. 1850 District 49, Page County, Va., 1 August 1850 dwelling 325 Joseph Rothgeb 49 Farmer $3500 Va (all) Frances 41 [said to be Frances Huffman on Rothgeb website] Susan 19 Dorothy 16 Magdelene 15 Attended school within the year Catherine 12 Attended school within the year Edmond 8 Attended school within the year Mary 5 George 3 1860 District 2, Page County, Va., p. 92, 17 July 1860 dwelling 625 Joseph Rothgeb 59 Farmer $4500 $3500 Va (all) Frances 52 Magdelene 24 Catherine 22 Edmund 18 Mary 14 George 13 1870 Marksville Township, Page County, Va., p. 43, 13 August 1870 dwelling 308 Joseph Rothgeb 69 Farmer $5000 $3040 Va (all) Frances 62 Keeping house Margaret 34 At home Mary 25 At home George 23 Farm laborer Isaac Comer 16 Farm laborer Barbara 84 At home |

Notes for PETER ROADCAP III: Peter is the son of Peter Roadcap and Mary Lipp as per the Rothgeb website. Peter was born in Unknown County, Va. This 1850 record below shows a Peter Roadcap living with Mahala Mathews. 1850 56th District, Rockingham County, Va., p. 75 ½, 30 August 1850 dwelling 1013 Mahala Mathews 23 Cannot read and write Va (all) Erasmus 2 Peter Roadcap 50 None 1860 District 1, Rockingham County, Va, p. 476, 26 September 1860 dwelling 3377 Peter Roadcap 65 Laborer $25 Va dwelling 3378 John Fulk 48 Farmer $2500 $600 Va (all) Martha 46 [Martha is d/o Emmanuel, Peter's brother] George 20 Farm laborer Sarah 18 Attended school within the year Eva 15 Attended school within the year Daniel 13 Attended school within the year Margaret 11 Attended school within the year John 9 Attended school within the year Martha 7 Attended school within the year According to the 1870 Rockingham County Mortality Schedule, Peter Roadcap died age 62, born Va., July (month filed), married, occupation farmer, cause unknown, in Brock's Gap Township. Could this be a record of Peter's death ? If he was married, where was his wife in the 1860 census ? |

Notes for [POSSIBLY] MAHALA MATHEWS: Some research shows that Mahala Mathews married Peter Roadcap, but I am unsure as to which Peter this refers to. Mahala is temporarily placed here. Mahala Mathews appears at age 23 as head of household in the 1850 Rockingham County, Va. census. According to the census, she can neither read, nor write. Also living in her 1850 household are a 2 year old Erasmus Mathews (?) and a 50 year old Peter Roadcap. Mahala's occupation is left blank. Peter's occupation is none. Mahala and Peter do not appear to be husband and wife in the census. If they are, there is quite an age difference. Peter is 27 years her senior. The 1850 record would make more sense if Mahala Mathews were were the DAUGHTER of Peter Roadcap III. Perhaps Mahala is the widow of an [unknown 1st name] Mathews, and Erasmus is her child. |
