Samuel did not serve with Washington's Continental Army. He did serve with Colonel Chase's Regiment of Militia, under Captain John Welles in response to the alarm of 20 October, 1780. There is an anecdote re: his joining. It seems that he was gathering firewood for his home when a group of men came running up and told him they were in urgent need of his services and to join them immediately. This he did, without telling his family of his whereabouts. At the end of his service in the Militia he returned to the forest near his home, picked up some firewood and returned home just as though he hadn't been gone at all.
The fact that he had 16 children may have had something to do with is sudden departure. Just a thought. Bill Meacham

The history of the town of Canaan NH relates some of the more unflattering details of the 1780 expedition to chase the Indians who had burnt present-day Rutland VT, such as the poor opinion some of the participants had about their leadership.
Samuel Meacham was listed as having gone for the whole 90 miles and 9 days as a private; did he bring in 9 days' worth of wood (less any time off for the Sabbath) when he returned home? Or was he too sore (after all, he was 40+ at the time) tod do so? (grin) I know (having just moved house at the same age) something of how tired the men were at the end of it all.
As far as I can tell from the Canaan NH history, this was the only time Samuel Meacham participated as a soldier during the American Revolution.
