He owned and operated several dry cleaning establishments in Valentine. He was a member of the Lions Club in San Ysidro and the Elks Lodge of Deadwood, S. Dak.
Darrell and Marie had no children but Violet Berg, formerly of Lusk, has made her home with them for a number of years and is endeared to them as a devoted daughter.
