ID: I121 Name: John KEISTER Given Name: John Surname: Keister Sex: M Birth: 1765 Death: 10 Oct 1826 in Union Co. Pa. Change Date: 25 Feb at 19:29 Note: John Kister, who is believed to have been the son of a John Kister or Kuster, migrated to Hartley Township about 1792. (There is a deed to a John Kister in 1792 at book E Pg. 323 in Sunbury dated 10, Jan 1792 from Jacob Graef and the area was then known as Buffalo Twsp. Not this John)
John would have been born from 1765 to 1770 and died between 10 Oct. & 23 Oct. 1826 in Hartley twsp, Union Co. Pa. near what is now Glen Iron Pa. He married Catharine Bud, daughter of George & Maria Margaret Bud about 1792 or 3. Bud died in 1825 in Union Co. testate.
John lived in Hartley in the area along Penn's Creek & was listed in J.B. Linn's book in 1796 and by Lincoln in 1811 & Lincoln stated he ran the Berlin Iron Works (Glen Iron) & designated him as John Kister, Penn's Creek. He was credited with making the first improvements between the creek & Jacks's Mountain & was probably a blacksmith & sawmill prerator. He was in the sawmill business south of Penn's Creek where the timbed was heavy in 1814. He lived & owned land near an old covered bridge just across Penn's Creek south of Glen Iron, a more recent community on the Pa. railroad line. John assembled 434 acres south of the creek at this place according to the records by deed. From William Green, (Pat.1774) to John Kister, 122 A 1826 From Andrew Albright (Pat. 1809) thru Henry, 22, Nov. 1811 and to John 2, Jun 1818 55A. From state of Pa to John Kister, 21, May 1827, 257 A. (Patent issued after John was dead and estate paid balance due)
This land was sold by John Jr. as executor to David Beaver, Clement Brooke & David Brooke 15, Jun 1827 to carry out contract F-329. It appears John sold it prior to his death and the conveyance made after death.
John's estate files in Lewisburg, Union Co. Pa. show his will dated 10, Oct 1826, probated 23, Oct 1826 which names the widow and children, five of whom were minors. It names John Jr. as executor. He qualified and served. The inventory lists the household goods and farm items and the account is rather complete showing payment of $80.44 as one sixth of one half ahsre as provided in the will to Benjamin. Benjamin is listed in the report for small item but it does not describe it. The widow received half of the estate for herself & 5 minor children but ther is no guardianship. She may have moved as her name does not appear in the records and Lincoln stated in his book that all of the family had migrated west.
The family appeared to live on a farm as was customary in that area & engaged in operating a sawmill besides. Most men had a trade & earned some extra funds from their trade & made most of their living from the farming but little surplus besides. The operation of the Berlin Iron Works probably was a crude smelter to make iron for local use as was the case throughout Pa. in those days. Transportation was non-existant except by conestoga wagon and poor roads prior to the canals of the 1820's & railroads of the 1830's & 40's. this area floated surplus lumber & grain down Penn's Creek in Arks (Flat Boats) during high water season & down the Susquehanna where the items were sold & the boats sold for lumber. There was no return except by wagon or pack animals so most items were made by home industry close to point of use as freight costs were prohibitive. Hence a pioneer life was somewhat crude & bar up in there valleys.
