Excerpts sent to me by Guy Graffius from the Graffius family history:
3-6 (2-1) Martin Graffius 1761-1853 Second son of Nicholas and Elizabeth was born October (some) records say August) 10, 1781 at Frederick, Maryland, where the family moved during the time that the Indians were being troublesome and the family had to leave their home in Pennsylvania, for Maryland and safety. Martin and his family returned to Pennsylvania where he attended the subscription schools, which were as primitive and rough as the life of the pioneers. But although the schools were rough he learned to read and write well. He became a farmer and distiller and owned and cultivated over 200 acres in what is now Henderson Township, Huntingdon County. He also raised stock. He built himself a house and barn and was considered an influential member of the community. In politics he was a Whig. He cast his first presidential vote for Thomas Jefferson. He was in the army in the War of 1812.
