4-32 (3-6) John B. Graffius 1815 - 1899 Son of Martin and Margaret was born 18 August 1815 on the family homestead near Henderson, Pa. He attended the subscription schools in a log schoolhouse as his father had done. He was married to Margaret Steel, daughter of Alexander. She was born about 1813 in Derry, Ireland. John worked on the homestead as well as neighboring farms until age 27 when he moved to Petersburg and there worked as a carpenter. Margaret and John's first three children died as infants. Margaret's health continued to decline and John returned to Huntingdon County where they settled at Petersburg. In 1879 John married Sarah Hutchinson, daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth Thompson Hutchinson. Their children were Jane (5-110), Margaret (5-111), John L. (5-112), and 1 infant. John was justice of the peace for fifteen years besides serving as township tax collector and for several years he served on the school board. He was a Democrat. He attended The Presbyterian Church where he taught for a time in the Sunday School. John died on August 10, 1899 at Petersburg, a very wealthy man. He also raised Matilda Keister's two youngest.
