COOKE: Searching the Cook(e) Family of Cumberland County, Virginia, before John Cooke(died 1775) and after, through his children: Stephen; John, jr; James; Sarah; Mary; Anne; Elizabeth; Frances; Agatha "Agathy"; Agnes "Aggy". John's parents were likely Abraham Cooke & Martha Clayton of Old Rappahannock/New Kent/Hanover. Believed siblings: Frances (debated), William, Benjamin, Abe, jr., Hannah, & Matthew. John patented land in present-day Cumberland County, VA in 1740, and had located there by 1747. Other Lines: Richardson, Edwards, Coleman, Hooper, Branch, Clayton, Baldwin, Ford, Chiles, Smith, Henderson, Crutchfield, Meredith, Burch, Booker, Butler, Chambers, Bostick, McAllister, Sandefur, and many others, in Gloucester, New Kent, Hanover, Louisa, Buckingham, Amelia, Orange, Spotsylvania, Mecklenburg et als Counties in Virginia, Surry & Stokes, North Carolina, & Rutherford, TN. among others. Additional interests: FamilyTreeDNA website. Cook/Cooke/Koch project; see "John Cooke Cumberland(1740's)", Kit #7221 under results, for possible matches. Descendant of Clayton Cook(e) proved related to this line, as well as a Terry, a Williams, and a Boatright. NOTE: New evidence indicates that Stephen Cooke of Buckingham(d1810) married Mary Sandefur, dau of Abraham & Joanna[Branch] Sandefur, not Mary Branch, as earlier believed. MORE NEW: also related via DNA tests: Rupert Cooke line of Texas; Beauchamp/Beacham of UK & Maryland; Offley of Colwich, Staffordshire, UK. ALSO, we have found a marriage record and birth record in Barbados in 1654 & 1661, respectively, which may prove to be Abraham's parents: John Cooke to Mary HILL, 1654; Abraham Cooke, son of John, born 1661. FURTHER: evidence appears to indicate a connection to the Cookes of West Sussex, UK: "Rustington", "West Grinstead", "Broadwater" (Cookes of the 3 Crescents).
SMITH: Line of Robert SMITH (ca1725-1776: will written 1771, probated after his death on 25 NOV 1776) who married twice? (Mary? then Elizabeth) and had the following issue: ROBERT, jr; GEORGE; MARY; LARKIN; BYRD; ELIZABETH. There were a number of ROBERT Smiths in Cumberland prior to 1777 (formation date of Powhatan). OUR Robert Smith was NOT the Robert Smith (son of William Smith of "Montrose", Powhatan) who married in 1763 Elizabeth James: The Montrose Bible and Chancery Records prove that; nor was OUR Robert the "Robert Smith" that married Ann Burton. See More Below.
