We are researching the Cook and Britton families of southern Illinois, as well as the Rossmans and Briqueleurs of Missouri.
My 3rd-great grandfather James Cook was born abt. 1808 somewhere in NC. He apparently moved to Ohio and married Mary Angel in Gallia County, OH in 1831. I first find James and Mary in the census in 1840 living across the Ohio River from Gallia County in Mason County, VA (today WV). In the late 1840's James and Mary left the Ohio/Virginia area for Illinois, and are in Jefferson County, IL in the 1850 census. Soon afterwards, they moved to nearby Hamilton County, IL where most of my Cook ancestors lived for many years.
I have no information on James Cook's parents. Around Gallia and surrounding counties in the 1820 and 1830 census were Cooks named Adam and Cornelius, but I have no information yet to connect my James to them. I would very much love to hear from anyone with additional information!
