Ancestors of Kayrle Jessica Beaugrand

Generation No. 11

1568. John Ferguson, born Abt. 1630 in Connecticut or possibly Scotland; died December 06, 1681 in Westchester Co., New York. He married 1569. Sarah Hunt Abt. 1650 in Stratford, Fairfield Co., Connecticut.

1569. Sarah Hunt, born Bet. 1635 - 1640 in Probably Stratford, Fairfield Co., Connecticut; died Aft. 1681 in Westchester Co., New York. She was the daughter of 3138. Thomas Hunt and 3139. Cecily Clarke.

Notes for John Ferguson:
John Ferguson had property at Stratford, Connecticut between 1660-1664. He then moved to Westchester, New York.
The earliest records show this family in Connecticut. John Ferguson purchased land in Stratford, CT from John Blakeman 11/28/1660 and evidently lived there. In October, 1664 he sold the land to Abraham Wakeman and then appeared in Westchester Co., NY, where he died 12/6/1681. The widow Sarah then was in Newtown, NY and gave her age as 40 or 50 years old and her son John claimed to be 25, therefore born abt. 1656, probably before his parent settled in Stratford. John Ferguson, Sr. was married to Sarah Hunt, d/o Thomas Hunt. On 12/2/1680 John Forgason and Robert Manning, now living on Cornwell's Nect in Westchester, sold to Gabriel Leggatt land that formerly belonged to Thomas Hunt, Jr. On 3/22/1682-3 Sarah Foruson (wife, should be widow) of John and Robert Manning realeased Gabriel Leggatt from a bill of 54 which he owed John Forgason for land. (From The Settlers of the Beekman Patent, by F. Doherty, Sr.)
From "The History of Washington County" (New York), p. 407: John Ferguson and his wife came from Scotland at an early day, and settled in the Maxwell neighborhood, on the farm now owned by a grandson, James Ferguson." This is the section of the book that deals with the town of Jackson. Apparently, many Scots settled near Ft. Edward, NY, especially around Argyle, NY. No proof that this our John Ferguson, but no proof that it isn't....
New York Historical Manuscripts - English 1664-73, by Peter Christopher, p. 185: List compiled by Constablee Joseph Palmer of Westchester of clothing stolen by Capt. William Lawrence's negro: September 29, 1672 " ... Thomas Farintun...one shurt ..?, pairee of trusares, one holon shurt, one nec..? hanni one neckcloth...." at the end it says, "Thar is more accounts of John Forgisone which (--?--) adrift." this makes it appear that John Ferguson had made other "reports" which had been lost.
History of Westchester Co., The Town of West Farms, p. 447: regarding will of Garbriel Leggett, made 4/16/1676 mentions the land and the meadow he "bought from John Ferguson, Sen., and Robert Manning." (Robert Manning was John's son-in-law.)
Documents Relative to the Colonial History of NY, Vol. 13, p. 488-489: Assessment Roll of West & East Chesterr in 1675: Rich'd Ponton (followed by a Colard), then Thomas Farington (9th on list), then Thos. Hunt, Sr. (followed by), John Forgasonn (with no taxables -- followed by), Robert maning (showing the largest holding of land in the town, followed by), Thos. Hunt, Jr.
Another tax list (presumably 1688) lists John Ferguson and Robert Manning as side-by-side, Robert listed as owning nothing and John Ferguson as the largest holding of land in the town. They probably lived together.
The 1698 Census lists a John Manning as one of John Ferguson's household. Perhaps his parents died. The Census identifies John and Sarah as both living and in Westchester Co. in 1698. In 1681, Sarah Ferguson testified along with her son John Jr. in a court case at Newtown, the seat of government at that time. Sarah was not widowed at that time.
Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700: Ferguson, James (should be John) & ???, b. 1660 Stratford, CT/Westchester, NY (indicating John Jr.'s birth and place).
