Starting in 1720, three groups of Cowans were thought to have left County Down, Ireland and immigranted to Chester County, PA . I am looking for info on the 3 different groups of COWANS that immigrated from Northern Ireland to Chester County, PA between 1717 and 1726. They were thought to be cousins and often intermarried, but DNA does not support this theory. I am in need of information on the lines & info on them while still in County Down, Ireland or the correct area. The groups are as follows: (1) 4 COWAN Brothers - David, Hugh, John, & William. It is thought that they immigrated as teenagers or young adults. (2) Robert COWAN (b) 1724, m 1743 Margaret HOPE. Robert was thought to be a young child when he immigrated. (3) 7 COWAN Brothers - Andrew, David, James, John, Matthew, Samuel, and William. The seven brothers group immigrated in 1726 with the WALKERS and HOUSTONS (several other families) It is thought that they moved together every time a move took place. In "The Cowans From County Down" by John K. Flemming, he does not tie the three groups together...he only says that the age they were when most of them immigrated would lead one to think that they came over with parents. My thoughts on this are that I think three brothers brought their families over and we just have records on the children. I am just now starting to verify the information in this book, he does list most of his sources. The book stops with Cowan History in about 1965, but I think he has answered a lot of my questions, pointed me in the right direction, and saved me a lot of hunting!!!! I am very lucky to own the book for it is a true labor of love. I am interested in the other branches resulting from marriages so if your line married a Cowan or you are a Cowan maybe together, we can find some missing links.(Yes, I collect all Cowan info in hopes that I can tie into it or forward it on to my many Cowan Cousins(:-)
