Generation No. 4

      9. James4 Wilkins (James3, Abiel2, William1) was born Abt. 1794 in Antrim, Hillsboro, NH, and died 17 September 1832 in Weston, Windsor, VT14. He married Miriam Harper 08 September 1818 in Antrim, Hillsboro, New Hampshire15, daughter of John Harper and Elizabeth Lakin. She was born 15 January 1798 in Alstead, NH, and died 11 February 1865 in Brighton, MA16.

Notes for James Wilkins:
James died intestate. Miriam had to pay to have his estate evaluated. In the end there wasn't much left after James' debts were paid. Miriam ends up selling the property and buildings to Asa B. Foster.

The death record on microfilm at the NEHGS Library in Boston says he was buried in the Old Village Cemetery.

Miriam is appointed guardian of Joel F., James F., Manly, Clark A., Marriette, Sarah, and Lemuel W. (Walter) on 2 September 1833. Miriam and children are next found in 1860 census, Brighton, Middlesex, MA. There are some possibles in the 1850 census, but nothing for sure. At some point between 1834 and 1860, Miriam married (Unknown) Martin. In 1860 census Miriam is listed as Marian Martin, she is 62 years old. She lives with a 35 yr old dentist, (can't read the name) and Martha, as well as her grandson George who is abt 1. This George (son of Manly and Martha) dies in 1860 in Brighton.

+ 28 ii.   James F. Wilkins, born 1821 in Ludlow, Vermont; died 01 December 1876 in Peterborough, NH.
29 iii.   Joel F. Wilkins, born Abt. 1823.
  Notes for Joel F. Wilkins:
This information I have is that Joel F. Wilkins was born in 1821 in Vermont, married in 1867 in Volney, Allamakee Co. IA. and died 9 Apr 1887.

I found a loose note in my file but I am not sure which state is came from. It is a handwritten note,a response to one of my inquiries. It reads:

Joel F. Wilkins - Probate Book D, page 134
Nancy N. Wilkins Probate Book H, page 29.

It is signed by a Mr. Vernon Tyler. I assume he was the clerk looking for information for me. This must have come from Iowa vital statistics since they died in Iowa.

That's all I've found so far.

Lynn Larsen From Iowa

Michelle,

I've heard nothing more from you but could you please share the information you have on Joel Wilkins' parents, names, dates. Thanks.

I have dug into my old records to see what I could find. My mother wrote for a copy of the adoption record for her father George E. Wilkins, he died five days before she was born. The adoption lists Joel F. Wilkins but not his wife, this is dated December 29, 1879 1o'clock pm.

I found a letter from my aunt Alice Wilkins, wife of Donald Wilkins (both are deceased). This is part of what she wrote: Oct, 19, 1980

Dear Lynn,
This is what I found out for you [about] Joel Wilkins. He married Nancy Thomas. She was his 2nd wife and I suppose that accounts for such a difference in age. Yes he had a family in Vermont. Thelma (my aunt Thelma Olive Wilkins) said Jane King (she shows up on the census I read) was Jane Thomas, Nancy's sister. Jane lived with Nancy after her husband was killed because she was never 'right' after that. After Joel Wilkins died Nancy married a guy by the name of Crow but the marriage only lasted a little while as he left when he found out the farm was deeded to George Wilkins and he couldn't get it...don't know who John McGoon is (his name was on one of the census reports I read) because George Wilkins was George McGoon before the adoption. John may have been a cousin or other relative...We (Alice and Don) visited Iowa on our way home and went to the cemeteries. We found Nancy Wilkins grave so she must have dropped the name Crow.
Maybe that will give you some more information. You're right that Nancy was born in Tennessee. I do want the information you have and will ask my son which way is the best, he is my computer person. Thank you for adding an important piece to this history. It is great to know these people are connected to us.

My grandfather George E. Wilkins had a sister. When their bio father died their mother (Sara Flack McGoon) remarried and adopted both children to separate families. George to Joel Wilkins and the sister to another family.

+ 30 iv.   Manly William Wilkins, born Abt. December 1824 in Reading, Windsor, VT; died 29 January 1903 in Tewksbury, Middlesex, MA.
  31 v.   William Wilkins, born Abt. 1825.
  Notes for William Wilkins:
Have not found any information on William. He listed in William Carroll Hill's book as a child of James, as well as several local town (VT) histories. According to the LDS individual records William was born abt 1825. He is not one of the children listed in guardianship papers after James, his father, dies. I have often wondered if there really was a William or are they making Manly William 2 people? Manly is listed as William Manly in places and Manly William in others, his death record calls him William Manly.
