Descendants of William (Buck) Hester

Generation No. 4

6. ALMA JERUSA9 HESTER (WILEY R.8, ROLING7, WILLIAM (BUCK)6, ROBERT5, ROBERT4, FRANCIS3, ROBERT H.2, FRANCIS1) was born August 27, 1876, and died November 21, 1955 in Franklin Co. AL Buried in Sparks Cemetery, Russellvillle, AL. She married JOHN LEMUEL SPARKS September 02, 1894 in Franklin County, Alabama, son of CHRISTOPHER SPARKS and ADALINE COOK.
Notes for JOHN LEMUEL SPARKS:
The John Lemuel Sparks family lived on about 280 acres in Franklin Co., Al along Tollison Creek. The house was hand planed by Christopher Columbus Sparks. It was an old-fashioned house with a dog trot with 2 big room, 2 side rooms(one of which the boys slept in and the other for the parents) and a kitchen off to the side. Water was supplied by a spring. They had an ash hopper used to make soap, a smoke house and a fruit house which Mr. Sparks made and filled the walls with sawdust for insulation. They raised most of their food. They had chickens, hogs, and cows. The boys would rob bee trees for honey. Of course they always loved to fish in the creek.

John Lemuel had a sawmill and a grismill. At one time he was Deputy Sherriff for Barry Sheed in Franklin County. He owned the first car in that part of the county and was known to have hauled more people to town from that part of the county. During the depression Mrs. Sparks sent food into town for those who didn't have it. The Sparks never went hungry. On Sundays Mrs. Sparks was known to cook for up to 20-30 people. Mrs. Sparks never complained about cooking for so many. Most of the cooking was done in the fireplace. A dutch oven was used for baking sweet potatoes. Daughter Rachel said her mother made the best sweet potatoes. Everyone would gather at their house. The men folks would throw washers by digging a hole in the ground and standing at a determined distance and tossing them. If anyone had silver dollars sometimes they would toss these. They also played marbles. Mrs. Sparks didn't allow certain things on Sundays. One was fishing. Two of her boys, George and Wiley, went fishing one Sunday on Tollison Creek near Bond Branch. They caught several fish but knowing how their mother would feel about them fishing on Sunday decided to tie them up and come back the next day to fetch them. The next day when they went to retrieve them a mink had eaten them all. They told their mother of their story and she said that was what they got for fishing on Sunday.
