He married Caroline Marie (Emilie) Hesse on Feb 21, 1894 in Newark, New Jersey^{728, 729}, daughter of John M. Hesse and Katharina Fosenges.

Taufregister (Baptism Register) of the church-parish Thumby (Schleswig-Holstein, Germany) entry No. 4 for the year 1872, lists his father as a "working man". His mother is listed as 31 years old, and Heinrich is the second child. He was Baptised on April 1, 1872. The Godparents are listed as, 1- Detlef Heinrich Neilsen of Thumbyeholm ( the name of a farm), 2- Nicolai Petersen Müller of Thumbye, and 3- Maria Möllgaard of Thumbye.

According to his petition for Naturalization, dated October 10, 1940, Henry stated that he was born in Schleswig (?), Germany on March 5, 1872 and entered the U.S. at the port of New York aboard the S.S. Gellert from Hamburg Germany on May 23, 1885. His petition in 1940 lists his wife and 6 children, omitting; Mildred, Henry Jr. and Richard. The two boys are believed to have been confined to a mental institution, and the omission of Mildred is unexplained at this time. On October 10, 1940 he lived at 35 Coit Street, Irvington, Essex County, New Jersey.

In the 1900 U.S. Census Henry was 27 years old, married for 7 years, was born in Germany, entered the U.S. in 1885, was still an alien and worked as a carpenter. He could read, write and speak English. He was living at 99 Magnolia Street, Newark City, Essex County, New Jersey.

The 1910 Newark City directory has a Henry Henningsen listed as "rem to Irvington".

According to the 1920 U.S. Census he arrived in the U.S. from Germany in 1896 (1900 Census correctly has him entering in 1885), was married, 46 years old, naturalized in 1916 (Naturalized in 1940), spoke German, could read and speak English and worked as a house carpenter. There were 9 people living with Henry and his wife Caroline at 1135 South Grove Street in Irvington Twp. Essex County, New Jersey.

In 1920 his daughter Martha was either divorced, widowed or separated from her second husband, a Frenchman named Picard. She had her two children, George and Gabril living with her and her parents. Family sources say that she had 2 other children born to her in the Caribbean that she was not allowed to bring with her when she returned to New Jersey (unsupported).

Also living there was another married daughter, Gertrude, whose husband is unknown and unaccounted for. Finally, his son Harry and his wife Grace (Theresa Grace Krebs) were also living there.
