On Vilmos Neufeld's birth registration he is listed as Mark Neufeld. He was a man's tailor master ("ferfi szabomester" )

Emigrated on October 9, 1886 on the ship R.M.S. City of Berlin from Liverpool & Queenstown, arriving in Castle Garden, NY. (See ships manifest as source document).

According to the 1900 U.S. Census Max Neufeld was 56 years old; married for 32 years; entered the U.S. in 1886; had lived here 14 years; was still an alien; worked as a tailor; and did not read, write or speak English (?).

Norma Neufeld recalls her mother Bertha Weil Neufeld saying that Max " was a fine gentle man who weighed about 100 pounds and would never walk across the Brooklyn Bridge because he said it wouldn't carry his weight".

The headstone of Max Neufeld - "Here lies the deceased" Our Teacher, Mordecai bar Zelig; Died 4 Av 5667 ; May his soul be bound up in the bond of life. " Now, bar you know means son of - so Max's father's Hebrew name was Zelig. The Hebrew date translates to Monday, July 15, 1907". Correction: "It says A pure and upright man, Our Teacher, Rabbi Mordecai ben Zelig. This man (Max [Mordecai] son of Zelig) was a rabbi!"

"Headstone for Morris Newfield. "Here lies the deceased. The pure and upright man, Moshe ben R. Mordecai Ha Cohen, Died 25 Tevet 5692. "Morris's Hebrew name was Moshe, son of Mr. Mordecai ha Cohen and is very significant! A Cohen can be followed back to the days of the Temple. The Cohen's were the high priests. It is an honor today and they have special privileges in the synagogue. The death date correlates to Monday Jan. 4, 1932."
