The Copenhaver Family of Smyth County, Virginia

Updated March 26, 2006

The Copenhaver Family of Smyth County, Virginia has previously been traced back to the early 1700s in the Palatine Region of Germany. This documented by Mildred and Robert Madison Copenhaver, Jr who painstakingly compiled an excellent family record in 1981. My recent attempt to follow up on their work and reach even farther back into the Teutonic history was frustrated by a lack of church or state documents. The absent articles most likely due to the 30 years war and the resulting destruction of many of the churches and public institutions in the 17th century Palatinate. As always when researching family history and encountering a dead end, you simply back up find another surname, then follow that particular branch to its terminus. This web page is a result of doing just that.

The information I have compiled was taken from the following books: The Copenhaver Family of Smyth County, Virginia. Compiled by Mildred Manton Copenhaver and Robert Madison Copenhaver, Jr Commonwealth Press 1981. The Tilson Genealogy from Edmond Tilson at Plymouth, N.E. 1638-1911. By Mercer V. Tilson. Plymouth Memorial Press, 1911. And the websites Ancestory.Com and Family Search.Org. I am completely confident in the veracity of the information I have obtained from the Copenhaver and Tilson books. However I cannot verify the validity of the information compiled from the websites.
