OSE DE LOS REYES BERREYESA:
Murdered by Fremont's men (of whom Kit Carson was one) June 28, 1846 as he landed from a boat at San Rafael on his way to Sonoma to visit his son Jose de los Santos Berreyesa, the Alcaldi of Sonoma, who was being held prisoner. With Don Jose R. Berreyesa were the twin sons of Don Francisco de Haro, a citizen of the Pueblo of Yerba Buena. They were also shot The dead men were stripped of their clothing and goods and they were left where they died. Several days later they were buried by the local Indians. Sergt. Jose Berreyesa was paid in 1830 at the rate of $10 per month for services as teacher in 1823. School-masters salary ordered paid by Echeandia.

Three of Don Jose de los Reyes Berreyesa sons were deranged after trying to protect the Rancho San Vicente while they had the measles. It is believed that the sons were fighting the squatters and mining company who were after the veins of quicksilver which ran through Rancho San Vicente. Dona Maria Zacarias Berreyesa was awarded a patent on the Almaden mining claim on June 24, l868 by the the United States Supreme Court.

While defending the Almaden quicksilver mine one night he was seized by masked raiders and hanged on a supposedly charge of murder. It was thought that the hanging was done to get him out of the way so that there could be a take over of the mines.

Lynched in 1854 by vigilantes. Lived.

Was part of the Juan Flores gang of "bandits" and was involved with the killing of Los Angeles Sheriff J.R. Barton and some of his posse near San Juan Capistrano about 23 January 1857. He was one of several of them captured, imprisoned in Los Angeles, then hanged by a vigilante committee along with Flores on 14 February 1857. (Letter to Marlene Coppi from Alexander V.
