OSE DE JESUS BERREYESA:
Soldier at San Francisco 1832-1833

He was sentenced for stealing horses at Monterey in 1835 and condemned to 5 years at the presidio in Santa Rosa. Source: Bancroft, Hist. of California

He received a Mexican Land grant with his brother Sisto on November 3, 1843 to the Las Putas Rancho in Napa Valley in Napa County. Later known as Berryessa Valley (See copy of land grant). The wives' of Jose and Sisto, Maria Anastasia Higuera Berryessa & her sister Maria Nicolasa Higuera Berryessa filed a claim for this tract on May 21, 1852 and received confirmation by the board of their rights to 35,515.82 acres on September, 5th, 1854 and it was confirmed by the court on August 13th, 1855. The Berreyesas filed the claim in their wives' names so that the courts would permit the brothers to testify and not rule against them for having an interest in the claim. source: Papers of Crestina Berryessa Campole.

Jose also had a Land Grant to Yacuy in 1846.
