4. JOSEPH L.3 LAIN (THOMAS2 LAINE, WILLIAM1) was born Bet. 1756 - 1757 in Albemarel Co., Virginia, and died 13 Mar 1846 in Bradely Co., Tennessee. He married REBECCA E. BOWMAN 1775 in Amherst Co., Virginia. She was born Abt. 1755 in Albemarel Co., Virginia, and died 18 Jul 1851 in Bradely Co., Tennessee.

The data furnished herein were obtained from papers on file in the pension claim W.1783, based upon the military service of Joseph Laiin, He was pensioned as Joseph Lane.
The date and place of birth and the names of parents of Joseph Lain were not given.

While living in Amherst County, Virginia, he enlisted and served as private with the Virginia troops as follows: in the summer of 1780, two months in Captain John Jacob's Company in Colonel Taylor's Regiment and was engaged in guarding prisoners at Albemarle Barrackswhich were capatured when Burgoyue surrendered; soon afterward he served two months under Captain James "Pamplain" in Colonel Taylor's Regiment and was stationed at Albemarle Barracks; then served seven months in Captain William Tucker's Company in Colonel Dabney's Regiment; he afterward served three months in Captain John Woodrough's Company in Colonel Merriwether's Regiment; he then served four months in Captain John Wear's Company, was in the siege of Yorktown and at the surrender of Cornwallis.

He was allowed pension on his application executed September 10, 1832, at which time he was seventy-six years of age and was living in Roane County, Tennessee. His pension was $60.00 annual allowance $180.00 amount received Feb. 19, 1834.

He moved to Tennessee about 1796.
Joseph Lane died March 13, 1846.

Rebecca's birth year is not clear.
On Nov. 31, 1849 she applied for widow's pension at the age of 94, that would make her birth year 1755.
If she were 104 per the 1850 census, her birth year would be 1746.
If her tombstone is correct and she died in 1851 and was 103, her birth year would be 1748.

* Joseph was on the road gang of Allen Lavender (with Charles and Randolph and Thomas Robertson);

* He seems to be the Joseph who had power of attorney from Martin Miller, Halifax Co., VA, to claim a legacy (William Laine was witness);

* In 1832 he was a witness of Thomas Robertson there (presumed brother-in-law);
* In 1840 he was in the new county of Bradley and then was 83;
* On 1 Feb. 1825 he had 160 acres of Hiwasse District, which he assigned to Dr. Person 1826;
another parcel he assigned to William Carter 11 Oct. 1838;
* Joseph applied for Rev. War pension Sept 10, 1832, at that time 76 year of age;
* He was placed on the pension roll 19 Feb. 1834;
* His widow applied for pension 3 Nov. 1849 at the age of 94;
* Benjamin Prater and Joseph Lane Jr. (age between 20-30) lived on one side of the river (according to the Roane Co. census of 1830) and Charles and Joseph Sr. lived on the other side;
* Benjamin Prater (m. Nancy Elizabeth Lane, dau. of William Laine (Waterman) who was the brother of Joseph Lain) had the ferry at that site on the river."
