He lived in Litchfield, CT a the time of his enlistment at Farmington, CT in February 1781. He enlisted as a private in Capt. Matthew Smith's Company for one year, when he was not quite 16 years old. He fought in one battle - the battle of White Plains, NY. He and his family lived in New York until 1800, when they moved to Ohio. Some records state they lived in Genesee County, NY, others state Whitestown, NY.
