According to Julia Wollard Trout:

He changed his name from Hickock to Heacox. Moved to Waterbury, Connecticut, where he was one of the original settlers. He was one of the assigness of the first Indian deeds and is named in all fence divisions and proprietors lists. Called Sergeant in 1686, "he was one of thee leading men of the settlement and died at his post at a critical time when men of the right stamp could be poorly spared." (Taken from "Hecox Henealogy")

Shumway, Esq., a lawyer in Syracuse, NY, dated May 1871, states that an attache of Joseph Bonaparte says the name is a corruption of Chamois, and a person bearing the name was the Compte De Chamois, a member of the court of Louis XIV.
