      512. William Hickock34,35, born October 1608 in London, England; died Abt. 1645 in Farmington, Connecticut. He was the son of 1024. William Hickocks and 1025. Alice Cottridge. He married 513. Elizabeth Bet. 1640 - 1642 in Farmington, Connecticut.

      513. Elizabeth, born Abt. 1620.

Notes for William Hickock:
He sailed from London, Engalnd to Virginia in 1635 on the ship "Plain Joan." He was 27 years old at the time. He was one of the original settlers of Farmington, Connecticut.

Since William arrived in America, the last name has been spelled 17 different ways: Heacock, Heacox, Hacox, Hacock, Haycock, Haycox, Heicock, Heicox, Hickock, Hickokes, Hickocks, Hickox, Hickok, Hiscock, Hycocks, Harcox, Hecox.

The origin of the name is thought to be Norman French. "Hick" was their nickname for Richard and "Cocke" is for cocky or saucy. The family went to England from France in 1067 because of religious differences - they were Huguenots.

[my note - Huguenots were French Protestants. I thought the persecution did not begin until the 1500's after the reformation occurred in Germany, and had spread to France. Check on this.]
