Generation No. 2

2. RICHARD2 CORKE (NICOLAS1) was born 1768 in Tonbridge Kent England, and died 1855 in West Ham Essex Greater London. He met SWINFIELD PULLEN May 12, 1801 in Spitalfields Christchurch Stepney, London, England. She was born 1781 in Leyton Essex.

Notes for R
ICHARD CORKE:
The following is information sent to me Pamela Corke from a Mrs Nutt whom I paid to send me a transcript of the Baptismal Registers for the family in Woodford Essex.

Essex Baptism Index Woodford D/P167/1/9 1800-1830
1806 Mar 2 John of Richard & Swinfield Cork
1807 Oct 14 Henry of Richard & Swinfield Cork
1809 Nov 26 Charles of Richard & Swinfield Cork
1812 Dec 6 James of Richard & Swinfield Cork
1815 Feb 8 Daniel of Richard & Swinfield Cork privately baptised Feb 8, born Jan 17 1815 and received into the congregation Jun 18 1815, Gardiner to Mr Medina.
1816 Sep 30 William of Richard & Swinfield Cork privately baptised at Woodford Church not at Wanstead Church, Coachman to Mr Bluat.(no received date into the church for this entry)
1819 Jan 3 Frederick of Richard & Swinfield Cork Servant.
1821 Apr 22 Catherine of Richard & Swinfield Cork Coachman

Note in baptism register.
Woodford church under repair. From Jun 16 1816 all Woodford baptism will be at St Marys Wanstead, unless otherwise stated, until Jun 12 1817 when Woodford Church was re consecrated baptisms, will cease at the Wanstead church.
May be this is why there is no received into church date for William, because the church was closed.

Richard Cork was in service - gardner, servant and Coachman while he was in Woodford Essex , before that he was in Westminster London England where his first born son , Richard was born ,

I have sent to the Latter Day Saints a request to obtain a microfiche of the marriage licence of Richard Cork and Swinfield Pullen . This will give me their approximate birth years, their father's occupation and names and any witnesses at the ceremony in 1801.

The information from Licence 689 from Spitalfields Christchurch Stepney London states that Richard Cork,s witness was a James Cork - we do not know if this was his father or another relative. Swinfield Pullen,s witness was a John Pullen - again we do not know what the relationship was. Swinfield did sign in her own hand ... may other women in the register had only a cross + witnessed by a church cleric. I was surprised at this... W. Mannin was the Curate who performed the ceremony published by banns ... It stated that both partners were from the Spitalfields Parish .

Notes for S
WINFIELD PULLEN:
Swinfield was able to sign her own marriage licence in 1801 - I read over the all of the entries for ChristChurch Spitalfields where they were married and most of the women were not able to do that .

I am still trying to research her . July 14 2005

The following is a result of a Census look-up I asked for - it is from the 1841 census

Richard was born in 1768 in Tonbridge Kent ... James was his witness in 1801 at his wedding to Swinfield Pullen ...If your James is my Richard's brother then James was born in 1771in Tonbridge as well . Richard and JaAmes were the sons of Nicolas and Mary Corke... I have more information ...I have accessed your site over the years on adn off and always felt that there might be a connection .. Woudl you like to exchange email addies. My CORKE family left ENgland in 1910 fo Canada and we are here ever since... I am the genealogist for our line.

Original Email:
Nor me - Swinfield Pullen is a pretty unusual name, after all! I was rather guessing about this association when I found the various records in the Christ Church registers, but from witness signatures and naming patterns, I have assumed that the Richard Cork she married was the brother of James Cork, who was my 3xgreat-grandfather. His son, my GGF, was a Richard, and another son was also a James. But there's not a lot to go on (there's a volunteer index to Christ Church in the London Metropolitan Archives, but I spent the best of a year not realising that my GGF's name had been misspelt, and looked all over the place before I finally tracked him down). Where the oldest Richard and James came from, though, I can't work out. James's marriage is in Boyd's marriage index for London, but there the trail goes cold. You can see my version of their tree at www.patrickwallace.me.uk/corke.htm
