JAKE MAKES TREASURES FROM JUNK by Charles L Hortin

Some make quilts from scraps. Other trinkets from shells. Statues from stone. Useful thinks from throw-aways.
Jacob "Jake" Gillihan, retired farmer in Hawthorne Township, makes machinery, equipment...almost anything from junk.
Although very modest about the building of his tractor-tiller, he said, "Yep, it's in the back yard. You want to see it?"
"There's not much to putting this thing together," he went on, "You have to go find the pieces of junk. One always collects more than is needed for such a project.
"In fact, I have almost enough to build another one, " he mused as he strolled over to a small pile of rusty parts and began to explain the way to get the job done.
"About all you would need would be a couple pieces of flat iron, and you would be in business, " Gillihan avered as he pointed to the various basic units needed for such a construction.
He could identify each piece that was used in building the most practical piece of equiment.
"It has 16 speeds forward, eight in reverse and three power take off speeds, which gives me all that I need for my garden and yard work."
The front axle is a Massey tool bar frame. The power is a two-cyclinder Wisconsin engine. It has a Massey Ferguson hydraulic lift system. The rear end is from a Ford unit and the transmission comes from a Chevrolet.
The gear box is from an old corn planter.
He said some of these things are not made anymore and not made as well.
The junk that he retrieved may have been discarded as long as twenty years, he went on.
The former Hawthorne farmer guessed that he worked on this for about one year. Then, he changed the length of time, after remembering that he actually started building it after January of this year.
"Oh, I had to do a lot of collecting before I could actually get to working on it. Then, I did it as I got around to it. There were no deadlines to meet, " he pointed out.
"It is all junk," said Jake as he opened up the hood to view the bright yellow-orange pointed engine, "except the tow front tires and the battery."
By observing the freshly tilled garden area, one had to agree that it will do the work. He indicated that it doesn't take him long to prepare the garden areas. He also maintains a clean garden space, where he grew an abundance of beans, corn, tomatoes and other vegetables this summer.
In addition to the tiller, he has an irrigation system which he rigged up to provide the moisture during the growing season.
If Gillihan ever has a need for another "play pretty, " he guessed that he would go about making it.
The tractor-tiller is not for sale, he declared. "I'll probably give to my kids or grandchildren, when I am done with it."

Frank's Hanging 'Em Up After 65 Years of Barbering
by Barry Cleveland, editor

A barbering career that began 65 years ago in a busy shop in downtown Enfield will end--at least officially--Wednesday in Carmi.
Frank Kello will be hanging up his clippers for the last time.
The 81-year-old Kello will walk away from his shop at the rear of the White County Abstract Co. building and head for a retirement that he hopes will be full of fishing, visiting and otherwise staying busy.
Barbering came natural to Frank Kello; he was 16 when he began a three-year apprenticeship with his father Bill and Uncle Charles at their shop in Enfield (on main Street in a building just west of the present village office building).
Those were busy times, and particularly Saturday nights. "It wasn't unusual for us to work until 11 o'clock some Saturdays," he said. He remembers one Easter when the shop wasn't closed until after dawn--and his hands were swollen from operating the hand-powered clippers.
After taking and passing the state exam (no formal training was necessary then), Kello worked successively at barber ships in East St. Louis, Mt. Vernon, Flora, Evansville, Ind. and Toledo, Ohio.
He came to Carmi, he figures, 53 or 55 years ago and went to work at Wilson Wise's shop on Church Street, toward Main Street from where the Town & Country Barber Shop is now located. Later he went to work for Hal Taylor and then opened up his own shop next door to Dr. Sibley's office (a block north, on Church).
Kello later operated a shop in the Ratcliff Inn and about 35 years ago moved to his present location, on the alley facing the city building.
The business was a lot different in the early years, said Kello; for one thing, there was no electricity, and for another, gas lights were used to light the shop. When electricity came, clippers activated by a wire running to a "trolley" on the ceiling were used. Haircuts were 35 cents, a shave 10 or 15 cents.
He's seen hair styles run the gamut, but Kello things short hair is becoming more popular again, after the trend toward long hair in the '60s and '70s. The trend change didn't bother him much, though.
"I never did fool with that long hair, " said the veteran haircutter. "You would have to go to school to learn how to style that long hair. I had enough older men to carry me through."
Kello said he still has a few customers he's served for 50 years or more--and some aren't eager for him to retire. "Several of them swear they'll come over and have me cut their hair under by carport!" he said. "And you never know--I might!"
Still, his plans are otherwise. He said he has three or four good fishing ponds lined up. "And I'll stay busy doing little things. I won't sit around doing nothing."
He and his bride to 56 years, Hazel (retired 20 years ago from Ainsbrooke), will also spend time visiting their children (Paul, of Clinton, and Frances, of Chicago) and grandchildren. And Frank figures they'll spend a few months later this year a Frances' condominium on Coronado Island, Calif., off San Diego.
As for the old shop, he's already made plans to dispose of most of the fixtures and equipment, and he said the abstract company plans to use the space for storage.
"I've had a good life; I've got no kick," said Frank Kello as he prepared to say goodbye to barbering.
