Notes for Martha Ford: The Great Migration Begins vol 1, p. 261
Martha Ford migrated in 1621 in the Fortune. First residence: Plymouth It is not known what happened to her husband ______Ford. He was born by about 1592 based on estimated age of eldest child. His death in Plymouth between 11 December 1621 and late 1623 (wife appears as "Widow Foord" in land division). Their marriage by about 1617. She married (2) Plymouth by 1626 Peter Brown; she had two children with Peter Brown and died by 1630.
Children of ____Ford and Martha Ford 1. John, b say 1617; d (or left Plymouth) between 5 Januay 1640/1 and 1643 (not in 1643 Plymouth list of men able to bear arms) 2. Martha, b about 1619 (d. Plymouth 20 December 1683 in her 64 year); m Plymouth 29 October 1640 William Nelson. 3. Son,b. Plymouth 9 November 1621; d. soon.
It has been concluded that the husband of Martha and the father of these three children sailed on the Fortune and arrived at Plymouth where he soon died, and that William Ford of Marshfield was not a part of this family. TAG 56;32-35 has an article on daughter Martha and her Nelson descendants.
The grant to the family of four acres in 1623 is subject to a number of interpretations. Barclay assumed that it encompassed the widow and three children, the husband having died by that date. Watefield held instead that the grant was for the widow Ford, her deceased husband, and children John and Matha, the child born in 1621 shortly after landing having alread died. A third possibility is that the son John was the the child born immediately after landing in 1621, and that the grant was for the two parents and the only two children of those parents. This would make John Ford only nineteen when was granted land in 1640, so if a person receiving a grant of land in Plymouth at this time was necessarily twenty-one, then this arrangement could not work.
