Notes for J
OHN CAMPBELL:
John was the first settler in the district surrounding Glenora Falls, Inverness Co. He came to this country in June, 1816 and settled near the Black River. He had a half- sister in this country by the name of Catherine.

Mabou Pioneers 1, page 292.

John Campbell was also known as John the Bear.
As a young child I can remember my grandfather, Alexander Dougald Campbell, talk about John the Bear. There was a song, in gaelic, which they sang about the MacGlashich Campbells who killed the Laird to prevent him from sleeping with his wife. My grandfather claimed they were descended from this branch but he would never talk about what happened. In 1980 I took a trip to Scotland and while there I met the late Ann MacDonnell who was related to the Campbells of this line and she was surprised that I had a version of the story, although mine was not the correct one. She told me that the event happened in the fifteenth century.
While searching the internet for information for my family tree, I went into the page of the Clan Campbell Society, North America at:
http://www.ccsnaorg/jsep10a.htm The information below came from one of their articles.
"MacGlashrich
The name derives from the MacGlasserich Campbells who hailed originally from Glassary in Argyll. Whether they are descendants of the 14th century Dougald Campbell who married Margaret of Glassary and was apparently dis-inherited from the Lochawe family is not yet clear. One branch of the family left Argyll and are on record as a group of Campbells in Lochaber where they have been part of a community of Clan Donald. Being in an isolated area of the Highlands north of Argyll, the family avoided the effects of the reformation and remained Catholics like the MacDonalds of Keppoch to whom they are said to have acted as bodyguards. This family are known as the Glassarach or MacGlassarach Campbells because they originated from Glassary, now Kilmichael Glassary in mid Argyll. The legend of their removal from Argyll was that the father of the family found that his wife was being "bothered" by the Crowner og Glassary. Catching him red-handed, he killed the man and so the family had to flee Argyll. The event is considered to be based upon fact and to have taken place in the fifteenth century".
