My ancestors immigrated from the Portuguese island of Sao Miguel in the Azores. Most of the ancestors on my mother's side, the Souza family (or "de Sousa"), were born in the "freguesia" (town) of Sao Pedro, which is within the "concelho" (municipal council) of Vila Franca do Campo. I have traced this family back 6 generations. I'm currently researching my father's side of the family -- Costa ("da Costa" in Portuguese). From what I've found, they descend from the freguesia of Sao Miguel, which is also within the concelho of Vila Franca do Campo.
