Notes for MYRTLE MAE COTTON: [linda j.FBK.FTW] Myrtle Cotton was deaf. Her sister, Vida, said that she remembers hearing Myrtle make the sound of a rooster crowing when she was very small so it is believed that she was not born deaf but that it was the result of an illness she had when she was very young. She went to the school for the deaf in Austin and all the family learned sign language so they could communicate with her. When her mother died, she left Austin and went to live with her sister Cassie Cotton Walker in west Texas. When Cassie died, Myrtle went to live with her brother, Lawson Cotton who lived in Fort Worth, Texas. |
