Courtney, John Ellis, also listed as "Courtney Jno E" and Courtney J. E." in some records. Originated somewhere in South Carolina, moved to Mississippi, one child "Hugh Ellis Courtney" know to have been born there, moved to Wilcox then Monroe county Alabama. First wife, Hugh's mother unknown. Second wife married June 14, 1849, "Sophronia M. Farrell", born Feb. 14, 1828, died March 29, 1921 at Hampton, Alabama, Monroe County. Four children, Ann, Mary, Martha, John.

Military record enlisted on March 17, 1862, Monroe County, Alabama, private confederate infantry, served with the 36th Alabama, Company G. Died March 2, 1864 at Hood Hospital, City of Covington, county of Newton, Georgia. John is buried at the Confederate Soldiers Cemetery on the Oxford College Campus, Newton County, Georgia.
