Notes for J
OHN MCQUAID:
From the letter of Robert A. Little (June 21, 1999): John McQuaid (1837- 1919) was a ship carpenter by trade. During the period 1861--66, he was enlisted in the 2nd Class Militia. Great Britain had allied itself with the Confederate state, so the Canadian border towns were fortified and militias trained to defend against the Union forces attack which never came. John worked for the Calvin Co., on Garden Island about one mile south of Kingston. Calvin Co. had extensive holdings. They harvested tall timber, particularly white pine, for ship building and mast replacement. These timbers were gathered at Garden Island and prepared for rafting down the St. Lawrence River to Quebec City where they were transferred to larger vessels and sent to England. Calvin Company also built sailing vessels, barges, sloops, schooners and barges on Garden Island. In time they switched to steam powered vessels. We will need to check this but I believe the "Clyde" was a steam ship that the company had built. I am sure that we would find mention of ships that would shoot the rapids instead of using the canals which had been dug along the shoreline. Shooting the rapids would have made the trip down a lot quicker. Calvin Co. eventually closed the works there and turned the area into a summer retreat for themselves. The town hall, school, and I believe a a couple of the stores are still standing as well as a couple of a few of the larger homes but the "works" have vanished. When I was young, the ferry out of Kingston would still stop at the island to drop off a car and supplies but the Province had discontinued the service. The island is no longer a township and is now just a private holding. John also built his own home on John Street in the 1860's (now called Russell Street) Unfortunately it has been replaced by a 20 unit apartment building. He retired from ship building in 1902 but continued to work as a carpenter in the city until 1912." Obit in local Kingston Newspaper in 1919 reads as follows: "In Kingston May 16, 1919 at the family residence 15 Russell St., John McQuaide, ship carpenter. Funeral from above address Monday 8:30 A.M. to St. Mary's Cathedral." Also, "Late John McQuaide --The death occurred at his residence Russell Street of John McQuaide, a well-known ship carpenter. The late Mr. McQuaide was born in Ireland but came to Canada at an early age and has resided in Kingston all his life. He is survived by two sons Joseph and William both of Kingston, and five daughters, Mrs M, Delaney, Mrs. A Robinson, Mrs A. Grate, Mrs. T. Marchand and Miss Bridget all of Rochester N. Y." 15 Russell St. is closer to Division than to Montreal. Originally Russell St. was part of John St. At some point in the 1870's, the section of John St.- west of Montreal St. was renamed Russell St.

  Notes for MARTIN J. DELANEY:
From the letter of Rob Little, September 15, 1999, the Delaneys lived on Russell Street in Kingston near the McQuaids. Mary was almost but not quite the girl next door. Martin was a carpenter in Kingston and in Rochester. Mary and Martin may have been estranged for a number of years (1910-1922). Mary spent most of 1910 and 1911 with family in Kingston. She then returned to Rochester, New York until 1922 when she joined Martin in Columbus, Ohio. She died there in 1934. (Trips to Rochester from Kingston were simpler at that time as there was a direct ferry link to a port just outside of Rochester.)
