Notes for W
ILLIAM MCQUAID:
William McQuaid started out as a carpenter's apprentice but by the age of 21 became a piano maker with the Wormwirth Piano Company. He remained in their employ until the death of his wife, Margaret. (Information taken from the letter of Rob Little, September 15, 1999.)
He is first found in Chicago in 1900 in the Illinois federal census records, living in the village of Riverview, Maine Twp., Cook County.
The 1900 Illinois Federal Census records show that he and his parents were all born in Canada. The family bible of John Daniel McQuaid (writing is John Daniel's writing) shows that William McQuaid was born in Ireland March 17, 1957.
From a phone conversation, June 2, 2002, with Ray Fisher of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, William McQuaid was involved in some sort of politics in Canada- either in Hamilton or Kingston. He thinks this has something to do with the reason the family relocated to Chicago, Illinois. He thinks that he may have some political troubles in Canada and left because of it. (Interesting side note anyhow.)
" There is no mention of William McQuaid in the 1892-1894 Guelph city directory. There was the Bell Organ & Piano Co. as well as Rainer Piano Factory in Guelph around that time. I also checked through various Guelph Historical Society publications and a Guelph bibliography and inventory of sources, but
found no mention of this piano company. We have some old issues of the Guelph Mercury and Advertiser for 1892, but I didn't see any articles about William McQuaid and his political troubles."
