Notes for W
ILLIAM MANG:
In the 1844 Polk's Buffalo directory, there is a Jacob Mang listed at 328 1-2 Main as a shoemaker. This information comes from an e-mail from Bill Koechig Jan. 27, 2000. I wonder if Jacob is related to William? He is also living in the 4th Ward

In 1855, there is a servant listed with the family of William Mang. His name is William Eugler. He is 19 years old and was born in Germany. He had been living in the city of Buffalo for 3 years according to the 1855 Census (FHL Film No. 825678).

Word of mouth said that the Mang line claimed to be from Alsace Lorraine.

I know that William immigrated to the US by way of New York City.

In the St. Peter's Evangelical Church records for the year, 1854, on 19 Feb 1854, at the wedding of Peter Stoire? and Catharina Schubert, the witnesses are listed as "Wilhelm & Georg W. Mang".
Looks like William had a brother, George in town.

St. Peter's German Evangelical- Genesee cr. Hickory- Rev. Geo Vogt
Microfilmed records available: some births, marriages & deaths 1848-1969 #1381672 ( give me names as I am going to order this one anyhow soon) History: Founded in 1835 when a German Congregation was formed within the Presbytery under the name German Evangelical Church. Up until 1848 this church was a mission of the First Presbyterian Church. Church was also known as St. Peter's Evangelical Reformed and St. Peter's United Church of Christ. Acquired the original building of St. Paul's Episcopal in 1849 and moved it to Genesee Street location. St. Peter's merged with Lloyd's Memorial , both became New Covenant United Church of Christ on Clinton St. in Buffalo. All St. Peters records were relinquished as follows: The original registers for this church are now located in the Buffalo & Erie Co., Historical Society. The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library may also have possession of some records (possibly bibles) in the rare book room. One of three churches that uses Concordia cemetery on Walden Ave. in Buffalo. Concordia cemetery records are on film # 0897407.

St. Stephen's United Evangelical (German) Adams cr. Peckham- Rev. Schelle was organized by several members whom had left St. Paul's German United Evangelical. Early services being held in the French Protestant churches at Ellicot & Tupper. In 1854 Rev. G. Schelle became pastor and served for 45 years. In 1858 the congregation built it's own church on Peckham and Adams Streets. In 1874 the church was enlarged and dedicated with a seating capacity of 1600. The Evangelical Church home (for the aged) was built in 1874, a school house was built in 1885 and a parsonage in 1900. The church was still on the same site in the 1920's. St. Stephen's was one of three churches that used Concordia Cemetery on Walden Ave. in Buffalo. Comcordia Cemetery records are on film # 0897407. Some scattered burial records are still held by the Concordia cemetery but not in any order. As of 1997, this congregation is now known as St. Stephen's Bethlehem United Church of Christ. Relocation in 1957 to 750 Wehrle Drive, Amherst, NY. The baptismal font in this church was dedicated in the original church on 22 May 1864. They are now in possession of the original registers (in the old German Script) for the following years: 1853-1879 all records, 1880-1901- deaths; 1880-1903 births, 1880-1898 marriages, 1880-1901 confirmations, and additional recent registers. They are in possession of registers for Pilgrim- St. James Evangelical and Bethlehem German Evangelical. Pilgrim St. James were originally two different churches as well . Pilgrim was an English Evangelical Church at Best and Herman Streets. St. James was originally St. Jacob's (1883) on Oak St. In 1884, a new church was built on Jefferson near High Streets were it stood in the 1920's. Bethlehem was originally founded in 1887 on Bowen (later changed to Woltz). In 1895-96, a new church was built at Genesee & E. Parade. This site is now occupied by the Calvary Baptist church.
