 Includes NotesNotes for Hugh Cowan:
The Cowan family originally was sent to the province of Ulster in Ireland around 1610 from Scotland to settle the area and to tame the Irish countryside for England. The Scots in Ulster, refraining from intermingling with the inhabitants of South Ireland, married among their own people; hence, the term, "Scotch Irish". Samuel Cowan, who was the brother of Hugh Cowan's father and the four sons of Hugh Cowan were living in County Down, Northern Ireland in the middle 1600's.Hugh's four sons Hugh Jr., David, John and William immigrated to America in 1720 and settled in southeastern Pennsylvania. Hugh Jr. settled in Chester County and his brothers, David, John and William, eventually removed to Lancaster County. William further removed to Rowan County, North Carolina. The family has dispersed to Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Missouri, to name a few of the areas where Cowans can be found.

It is believed that the greater number of Cowans descended from the MacCowans, a sect of the clan Colquhoun in the Scottish lowlandsl. Many generations ago the family was prominent in Stirlingshire, Scotland, and were numerous in the district of Galloway, particularly in Wigstownshire in the vicinity of Kirkcowan. One may conclude, therefore, that the Cowan family was of Scottish origin.

Since the Cowans were of Scottish origin, a goodly number doubtless remained in their native country; however, by the time of the accession of William & Mary as joint rulers over Britain, many of the Cowans had moved into Ulster, principally becoming residents of County Down. From there in the early 1700's they began migrating to America through the Port of Newry, County Down . A number of them shared prominent roles in the development of eastern Pennsylvania, especially of that part embracing the counties of Chester and Lancaster.
