I'm mostly looking for ancestors and descendants of my great-great-grandfather Charles Wesley COWAN, a miner who immigrated from Scotland to the McKeesport, Pennsylvania, area; he married Annie BLACK in 1848. Annie was also a Scots immigrant. She was 16 when her family came to America from Glasgow, and her father founded Greenock, Pennsylvania.
Charles & Annie had 10 children, of whom 7 survived to adulthood: Elizabeth, Francis (a daughter), Charles (my great-grandfather), Thomas, Addie, John, and George.

In the 1870s Annie & Charles moved to Ohio coal-mining country; he died in 1882 and is buried in Oakfield, Ohio. That same year Annie married George Raine and moved to Kansas with Addie, John, and George. Also according to her obituary, when she died in 1913 her family were scattered across the country: Elizabeth in Oklahoma City; Charles and Thomas in central/southern Ohio; George in Minneapolis; John in Big Springs, TX; and Addie in Maple Hills, KS. (Francis had died in 1882.)

I've discovered that there are many, many Cowans, from both Ireland and Scotland, and an amazing number of us are looking for our roots. I'm hoping that some of those Cowans are researching the same line that I belong to, and specifically that I can find out where in Scotland my great-great grandfather was born. I've discovered several cousins through my Internet research, and am eager to meet any others who are out there.

Use the links below to see my family tree, detailed information about my ancestors (not just Cowans/Blacks, but all branches), cousins' web sites, and useful sites such as surname and region query forums.
