BIRTH-MARRIAGE-DEATH: HENCKEL GENEALOGY, 1500-1960; ancestry anddescendants

of Reverend Anthony Jacob Henckel, 1668-1728, pioneer Evangelical Lutheran

minister, emigrant from the German Palatinate to America in 1717; compiled

by William Sumner Junkin and Minnie Wyall Junkin; C.W. Hill Printing,

Spokane, Washington, 1964; Family History Library microfilm #0962527 and

#1036442. He is individual #623, beginning p. 902 of the HenckelGenealogy.

DEATH: Charles T. Greve's "Centennial History of Cincinnati", 1904, Vol.1,

page 289 gives date of death as March 17, 1793. However, McBrides Pioneer

Biography of Butler County, Ohio (adjoins Hamilton Co. on the north) talks

about years of 1791-2 as being a period of consistent Indian raids on the

settlers and gives the raid near Covalt Station as an example. Sincerecord

of second marriage of widow Lydia is recorded as January 10, 1793, then it

must be assumed that death was in 1792. Joseph Hinkle and Captain Abraham

Covalt were attacked by Indians by tomahawk and then scalped. This waswhile

cutting timbers outside their homes at Covalt Station, which is regardedas

the first of several block-houses or fortified stations erected by theearly

settlers for their protection. The settlers build their homes around the

fortification.

MILITARY: The Daughters of the American Revolution Official Roster of the

Revolution, buried in Ohio, 1929, p. 187 lists "Joseph Hinkle private,

Captain Conrad Karner's Company, Lieutenant Adam Fisher's Regiment,

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Militia. Born Lancaster County,Pennsylvania,

died in Ohio."

Do you need copies of the references. If so, I need a snail-mail address.

I find this message disturbing as I, too, have ancestors buried in this

cemetery.

I would like to ask Leila a question. Did you find the parents of Asa H.

Smith? The cemetery record says his middle name was Hinkle. There iscause,

therefore, to believe that his mother was a daughter of Asa Hinkle andwife

Mary Brecount Hinkle, also supposedly buried in the Murray cemetery. Asaand

Mary had several daughters for whom I have no spouse recorded. Asa andMary

are my 4th greatgrandparents.
