One resource did not list Elijah's name amoung his other brothers and sisters. His record was completely left out of the list eventhough all of his brothers and sisters were listed. This raises the question of whether or not Elijah's side of the family may have been disowned at one point.
Gladys and Clarissa Draper (decendants of Elijah) tell a story of a day when Pop Sayers (Elijah) met for a couple of hours with an Uncle and afterward came in the house crying. He said that someone had disgraced the family name and that the family name would have to be changed. Mom and Pop Sayers had to then teach the children how to write their new names.
The version of the story that I heard said that the family changed their name from Sears to Sayers but I now believe that it may have been to opposite... That the name changed from Sayers to Sears. In any case, there are numerous legal records that date back several generations that show Sayres as the original name and there is no mention of Sears anywhere. We assume that the names were never legally changed to Sears and therefore the name change was eventually dropped.
