RTHUR CHARLES CRAIN:
A. C. CRAIN was sheriff of Christian Co., Missouri in the 1870's. He was also elected first mayor of Sparta after incorporation. His son, Thomas CRAIN, was a Missouri state representative in the 1930's. Several other members of the family were in politics, serving in various capacities.

IRAM H. CRAIN:
Hiram served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted in the Eighth Missouri Volunteer Calvary, under Col. W. F. Gregor, and served three years. According to the book, A Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region, Hiram Harrison Crain was married prior to the War, and had two grown children residing in Webster County in the 1890's, although neither wife, nor children are named. Hiram died on the battlefield near Boonsville, AR Oct. 24, 1864.

10. JAMES HENDERSON3 CRAIN (JAMES B.2, WILLIAM B.1 CRAIN SR) was born 1837, and died 1872 in Clarksville, Red River County, TX. He married PERMELIA WHITEMAN, daughter of AMOS WHITEMAN and SARAH CHENEY. She was born September 27, 1847 in Danville, Illinois, and died 1871 in Red River County, TX.

AMES HENDERSON CRAIN:
James Henderson was also known as "Pony". He served in the 3rd Missouri Calvary CSA Co. D along with his brother, John K. Crain. They married sisters. Pony married Permelia Whiteman, John married Susanah Whiteman. Their sister, Martha, married Squire Whiteman. The parents of Permelia, Susan, and Squire were Amos and Sarah Cheney Whiteman of Illinois who moved to Red River County, TX about 1850. Permelia and their two youngest children died the winter of 1871. Pony died one year later of pneumonia. He is not listed among the Confederate Veterans buried in Red River County, although he must surely be buried there.
