Thomas Harvey Craig

John Craig was the great-grandfather of Thomas H.Craig.Thomas' father was George W.Craig who was the son of big George Craig who was the son of John and (Betsy)Elizabeth Craig.George W.Craig,father of Thomas H.Craig,was born at Harmony Pa in 1864 when they removed to a farm near Tidal,Armstrong Co.Here he lived with his son and died at age 83,physically well preserved and having all his mental faculties unimpaired. He (George W.Craig)followed the occupation of farming all his life.
The children of George W.Craige and Sarah (Campbell)Craig were:


Ann, who married Robert Kinzer,of Butler Co., Keziah, who married Richard Stanford,;Mary,who married Seth Fenn,;Elizabeth, who died young,;Thomas Harvy, mention later,;George, who lived on old home farm,who married Eliza Hardy,;Ida,who married Perry Campbell,;James Miles Craig of Arnold, Pa. and Milton Craig of New Kensington,who married Cora Davis. Thomas Harvey Craig,recently councilmen from the First Ward of New Kensington,and carpenter at the reduction plant of the Aluminum Co.,was born on a farm in Butler County,near Karns City,Pa.Oct.16,1860.


When he was three years old his parents sold this farm and bought one of 95 acres near Tidal,Armstrong Co.Pa.,and here he grew to manhood.He attended the local schools,his first teacher being James McCree.At 17 he decided he had had enough school and must go to work So he obtained a position in the coal mines of Armstrong Co.,and pursued that occupation for 20 yrs.He has dug coal in all the veins of that entire region.He married Nov.26,1884,Lucinda Duncan,daughter of David and Nancy (Wolcott) Duncan, of Armstrong Co., Pa. After this he established his home in Armstrong Co.,and one year later removed to Butler Co.where he lived at Bruin Station for two and one half yrs.He then removed to Cheswick,Pa.,where he remained for 3 years.Returning to the old home in Armstrong Co.,he was there for about three and one half yrs.In 1898 here moved to New Kensington,which had then but recently incorporated and many of the improvements were lacking.Mr.Craig had however a natural aptitude for mechanics and an unusual dexterity in the use of tools.His father had always a great many tools of all kinds about and had allowed the boys to make use of them.This ability to turn his hand to almost anything had often served Mr. Craig in good stead.


Mr.Craig had been a Republican all his life and was elected on that ticketin 1914 to the city council.Since that time any improvements have been carried out in the administration of the city,paving having been laid,etc. He has been a member of the Knights of Malta for two years,and belongs to the Patriotic Order of the Sons of America and to the Ancient Order of United American Mechenics.Mr.& Mrs.Craig have three children one died as an infant.They are David W.,of New Kensington,who married Annie Henderson;Carrie,who married George Booker,of Arnold; and John who married George Confer, of New Kensington Pa.


Mr Craig came from old American stock his great-great-grandfather, John Craig Sr. having come from Ballyroney, County Down, Northern Ireland in 1773.
