Notes for JOHN LOGAN ANDERSON:

Married in home of Rev. David Blair of Indiana, PA. John & Eliza bought part of his father`s farm. He was a cabinet maker, blacksmith, made shoes and boots. John also had a broom machine. Made a cider press by putting a heavy beam under a block, a vessel below contained apples, he weighted it down and made cider. He made coffins, a length of cornstock was the length of a body and a notch he had made in a stick fitted for the width of a body. He made flyers, spools, wheels for spindles for spinning yarn. Women walked or rode horseback to get spinning outfits repaired. Eliza wove blankets, sheeting, toweling. Celebrated 50th Wed Anniv with 127 guests. John fell down the steps at this celebration and the injuries lead to his death. Martha lived at home and helped with domestic work. Elizabeth lived at home - taught Sabbath School, charter member of Armstrong Grange # 1695. Mary - lived at home until her health failed. She kept many records of the early family which much information is given here.[108018.GED]

Following a lingering illness of several months, the end came peacefully to Edward Miller Craig at his home near Parkwood on Tuesday, August 18, at 4:00 p.m., aged 54 years, one month and ten days. The deceased was a son of the late William Craig, and lived all his life in the community where he died. He was a charter member of the Armstrong Grange 1645, and held membership with West Union United Presbyterian Church. Owing to their being no pastor at West Union, the funeral services were conducted at his late home on Thursday afternoon, August 20 at 2:30 by Rev. M D McClelland, pastor of Curry's Run Presbyterian Church. Interment followed in Curry's Run Cemetery. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Mrs. Blanche (Caldwell) Craig, a daughter, Agnes B., and son, Nelson J Craig, residing at home. Also two sisters, Miss Luella M. Craig, who resided with the deceased and Mrs. Anna M Dione, of Detroit, Michigan.

Alex was James Alexander Anderson who was married to Jennie May Bracken. Martha May Anderson McShane was born Apr. 14, 1916. The picture of her in front of Ringsend Presbyterian Church was taken a couple of years after I visited County Derry, Ireland. She went there with one of her daughters. I had gathered info that interested her. The Ringsend church was built in 1835 after the Andersons' migrated. I found that Ringsend was an offspring of Killaig Presbyterian Church.

When I came home from the reunion I picked out the enclosed pictures for your use. You may keep them. I was hesitant to send the only ones I have for rear of losing them in the mail. So, I went to Wal*Mart. It was quick, easy, and cheap. I hope they will be satisfactory. I have identified all people on the back of each picture.

I am enclosing a print of William. and Elizabeth LOGAN Anderson at a younger age. She was more plump at that time. He looks the same except fewer wrinkles. Anna ANDERSON Koontz gave me the copy machine picture. I don't know if she has the original or not.

Nancy ANDERSON Ray was one of the fourteen children of William and Elizabeth LOGAN Anderson. I have identified those of the Ray family picture. This is the family that had the blacksmith shop and telephone exchange in Parkwood.

My line of descendant is from the oldest child of William and Elizabeth LOGAN Anderson. John was born three weeks after William and Elizabeth arrived in Chester, PA. She must have been a strong woman to endure a trip across the North Atlantic on a bobbing sail boat and then give birth to fourteen children.

I am enclosing names of John's family, Samuel and Carl Anderson showing my name in the Carl Anderson family. My ancestor chart isn't complete but I may get back to it soon.

You probably have the families of the other Andersons. I have charts of all Samuel & Jennie Brown children and their descendants. It amounts to volumes. Also, the other married children of John and Eliza.

Dear Dr Howard:

I cant tell you in words how much I appreciate knowing and talking with you. Then this envelope and information, Photos, Maps, etc., comes in the mail! I really wish you could have been here when it arrived. I've had so much fun going through all of this. Everything is now computerized and I have printed out a draft of everything we have on the Anderson Family at this date in time. It will be preserved in a way that can't be destroyed. There will be children for as long as God allows this Earth to exist that can learn from all of this. People looking for their roots will come upon your file and the Craig data base and appreciate all we have done.

You told me that you are not a computer buff. However, I thought it only fitting that you have a Computerized copy of this file. If you know of someone, family or friend, that does work with computers and can use this – your are more than welcome to share it. The CD is but a time capsule of who, what, where and when, the Andersons, Hendersons & Craigs are and what we were all about. (Poor English)

I was interested in finding out, "when did the Andersons attend Killaig Pres. Church?" And, do you know if any Craig family members attended there. As you know, we are a bit unfortunate (Craig Family) in that we are unable to trace our roots beyond John Craig of 1776. He came to Philadelphia and worked in his brother's shop [Henry Craig] to pay off his indenture. We have no exact records or information on which ship he came over on, and anything other than he came from County Derry.

Also, Stewardsville, and its change of name to Parkwood. The question has never been answered as to why it was changed? I recall reading something about, "That Dreadful Place," in reference to a Civil War Prison that was thought to be located there. Roomers have it that the name became so offensive that someone thought that it would better be called, Parkwood. I have no evidence to support this. Was wondering if you might?

I am very appreciative of the volume of material I received in the mail yesterday from you. I want to answer your questions promptly as I may put your letter in a file of things to be done later. Sometimes later is much later.

      Question One: Yes, I was taught handwriting using the P.O. Peterson system – I believe that office was in Greensburg and they influenced most school districts in Pa. I have a number of handwriting certificates from my elementary school years. I taught in places where the Palmer method was used.

      As for "Doctor," it is in education. I have a B.A. Degree from Western Washington University at Bellingham, Washington. It was Western Washington College of Education when I graduated. Then Western Washington State College and now has grown to a university size of ten or eleven thousand and many colleges other than education. I had an uncle on my mothers side who lived in the Northwest. I taught 5th grade in Battle Grown, Washington. In the meantime I attended Columbia University in N.Y.C. during my summers. After receiving my Masters Degree, I taught in the campus school of the State University of New York at Potsdam. I demonstrated "How to teach the subjects of eighth graders and I supervised (over)

student teachers who were assigned to me. I kept working on my Doctor of Education degree at Penn. State Univ. Then I went to college teaching. I retired from Long Beach State University in California. My job there was supervision of student teachers in off campus schools in and around L.A. On campus I taught methods courses on how to teach elementary school subjects such as reading, math, social science, etc.

      John Logan Anderson was only married once. He married Eliza Caldwell. I think their's was one of the pictures I sent you.

      Yes, Elizabeth Logan was born in 1798 in Ireland and died June 22, 1871. My records don't show the month and day she was born.        Martha Anderson McShane is a sister of Anna Koontz. Their father is Alex Anderson, who was the youngest of John E., who was the second son of John Logan and Eliza. Alex was James Alexander Anderson who was married to Jennie May Bracken. Martha May Anderson McShane was born Apr. 14, 1916. The picture of her in front of Ringsend Presbyterian Church was taken a couple of years after I visited County Derry, Ireland. She went there with one of her daughters. I had gathered info that interested her. The Ringsend church was built in 1835 after the Andersons' migrated. I found that Ringsend was an offspring of Killaig Presbyterian Church. In talking with Mr. GeorgeHagerty his wife suggested that Mrs. Linda Gilmore might be able to help me. Linda had come from Connecticut in search of ancestry. She met and married a handsome Irishman, 14 years before. They married and had three children, Linda traveled around and copied church records. She had volumes. The information is from Rev. Byres notebook of 1805-1857. He listed baptisms dating to Jan. 16, 1810. "Tuesday, at Meave Manougher born Dec. 28, 1809 named Mary. March 8, 1812 Sabbath after sermon baptized children as follows; a son to J. Young of M. Manougher named William.

      Jan. 19, 1815 Thursday after "catching in M. Manougher - baptized a son to J. Young born a few weeks before named James.

      Dec. 3, 1915 Sabbath, After sermon a son to Wm. Young of M. Manougher born about two weeks ago named John.

      One entry in the Killaig Ch. records gives Wm & Mary Anderson's names saying "Gone to America."

      I have a list of passenger arrivals at the Port of Philadelphia 1800-1819. There is a Wm. & bro. & mo arriving on the Active May 13, 1816 and Wm & wf. & son arrived on the Wellington Aug. 5, 1816. I think the Wellington was the ship the Andersons came over on. There are sixty nine entries of Andersons arriving in Phila. between 1800 and 1819. Four Williams, seven Thomas, four Roberts, two Samuels', etc..       In your records you have both James and John as being the son fo Wm. & Mary Haggerty. My records show it was John. He settled at Taylorsville near Clymer and it was to his home that Wm. & Mary came and lived until they moved to Parkwood to Wm. & Elizabeth Logan Anderson's home. I have found that John had a daughter named Jane who married Alexander Stevens. Jane had a son Shadrack Stevens whose daughter Blanch married Homer Bagley. Home Bagley's mother was Elizabeth Brown who was my grandmother Anderson's sister Jennie Brown married to Samuel Anderson. Homer Bagley's son, Col., Ronald Bagley, asked me if I was any relation to the John Andersons of Taylorsville. Until then I didn't know Ronald (second cousin) was double related to me.

      My passenger list doesn't include the name Craig. It just covers the part of the alphabet Andae, Christopher thorough Andrew, Samuel. I don't know if any Craigs attended Killaig Church. Linda Gilmore only gave me info. on the Andersons. She had copied volumes of info. I would like to make another trip to Maive Manougher and spend some time there but I doubt if my health would permit me to go alone as I would prefer to do.

      Aunt Mary Anderson ( I sent you her picture) recorded much of the Anderson family history. She was born Oct. 29, 1966. Her grandmother Elizabeth Logan died June 22, 1871 and grand father Apr. 8, 1879. I imagine there was an Irish accent that aunt Mary listened to. She recorded what she heard and it probably sounded like Haive (?aive) McNaugher. Then I went to the genealogical center they said there was no such spelling, so we tried a name that sounded like it.

      As for Parkwood's name being changed – I never read about a Civil War Prison being there. I doubt that story. It has always been my understanding that the postal system was responsible. There were places of the same name. The town of Apollo was once Warren. There is an other Warren in Northern Pa. The village of Girty near where I live was once called Clayton. At one time addresses included the county in which the town was located. AS for Stewartsville there is a Stewartstown in York County. I'm not sure if Parkwood was Stewartsville or Stewartstown. I would like to read about the prison. It seems to me that if it was, "That Dreadful Place" that it would be this time been written up as was the awful place in Georgia called "Andersonville."

      My middle name, Blair, was given to me by my mother, Ida Belle Swank. She had a relative Swank who was married to a Kaufman. Grandma Kaufman's sons were Arthur Howard and Blair Lloyd. They wanted this new baby to be named for them, so I guess they pleased both of the Kaufman boys. When I started to highschool I had room and board at the home of Arthur Howard Kaufman and wife Velma. In those days there were no school buses. South Bend Township paid tuition to whatever schoolsystem we chose to get a highschool education. Since I had lived and attended school in Vandergrift, that is where I wanted to go. I was in fifth grade when we moved from Vandergrift to the farm. Grandma Anderson died Oct. 21, 1932. We moved here on November28th. I finished elementary school at Zions Valley School, later called Barrel Valley School – 5th through 8th grade.

      I have a partial autobiography of my life that I will send to you if you would like a copy. It was written for nieces and nephews so that they will perhaps understand a family problem with my oldest brother and oldest sister who get along with very few people. I upset my brother's one daughter in what I wrote about her parents; but the truth always seems to hurt. I thought I was being kind as there was so much more I could have said. There were family squabbles in each generation. My father had problems with his brother Neal. When Neal was on his death bed he asked for my dad to come to the hospital. All was forgiven. My grandfather Samuel had problems with his brother John E. who was Anna's (Koontz) grandfather. And I suppose there were problems in the Wm. & Elizabeth Logan Anderson family although I never heard any tales concerning them. Jealousy is a big factor, which is uncalled for since we all have the same opportunities. I always feel glad when someone does well.

August 24, 2002 Letter to Bob

Yesterday, I visited a few minutes with Art Craig. He was sitting reading his Bible when I entered his room. His doors were covered with birthday cards that he received for his 90th on August 20, 2002. 52 of them.

I'[ve been curious about the name "Parkwood" since you asked but still haven't found out. I'll keep checking and also the dates of change from Steuratsville. Anna Koontz tells me that Aunt Mary Anderson used to tell them that the name was supposed to be changed to "Andersonville." That goes along with what you said about the prison of Civil War days. She said that the people objected because of "That dreadful place" in Georgia. I don't know if there would be any newspaper articles dating back to the name change or not. I never heard Aunt Mary tell the story. She would have gotten the story from John and Eliza or other older people because Aunt Mary wasn't born until after the Civil War. Of course the story of Andersonville, GA, lingered on even until today. It seems a question of when the name "Parkwood" was given. Nothing would have ben known about Andersonville, GA., until the Civil War. When I visited Andersonville, GA., I remember a guide or a sign that told about a sanatorium hospital being located there prior to the prison. I read a novel years ago named "Andersonville" by MacKnlay Kantor. It was around 800 pages and was very depressing. I could only read a few pages at a sitting but I was determined to read the book from cover to cover -- and I did.

I'm enclosing the names of Martha McShanes brothers and sisters. I think you are missing some of Alexander Anderson's family. Anna Koontz told me that Ward Craig should have the whole family on the Anderson side. She also has a copy (4 volumes) at the Indiana Historical Society. I don't know the address but it is at 6th Street, and whatever the street is that angles down to 7th Street, Indiana, PA. . . . (some health conditions spoke of), Sincerely, Howard.
