Sudden Death of W. H. Hampton
Our community was shocked Tuesday evening when the sudden and unexpected death of Attorney W. H. Hampton was announced. Mr. Hampton had been down town mingling with his friends in apparently good health and spirits and had returned home somewhat fatigued. A short time later he was found dying in his chair. Mr. Hampton had been a practitioner at the Grundy County bar for many years and was known as one of the best land lawyers in the county. He was born in 1842 near Altamont in this county. His first wife was Miss Nellie Freeman from whom he was separated shortly after they were married. He then married Miss Libby Smith of Altamont. To them were born five boys and four girls. After the death of the mother of these children, he married Miss Dutton, who nobly assisted him in raising his large family of children. Besides the widow the following children survive and mourn his loss. Messer s Smart Hampton, Charley Hampton, Wade Hampton, Jay Hampton, Mrs. Jas. Scott, Mrs. Willie Nunley and Mrs. Ida Henderson.

Resolutions of Respect to W. H. Hampton - We, the undersigned committee appointed by J. K. P. Pearson, Chairman of the Grundy County Bar Association, at a meeting of the Grundy County Bar held at the Court House in Tracy City, Tenn., on the 15th day of November, 1916, to draft suitable resolution of respect to W. H. Hampton, a member of this bar who lately departed this life, respectfully present the following:
That, in the death of Mr. Hampton the Bar has lost a valued member and the County a good citizen.
Mr. Hampton was born seventy four years ago last August, in Warren County, which territory afterwards became a part of Grundy County. He was admitted to the Bar in 1870 and was actively engaged in his profession from that date until the date of his death which occurred at his home in Tracy City on Oct., 10, 1916.
Mr. Hampton was noted for his kindness and courtesy, to not only every member of the Bar and to the legal Fraternity in general, but to all with whom he came in contact. He was even tempered, quiet and cool under all circumstances and conditions; of a genial disposition and never offended any who opposed him in the pursuit of his undertakings and contentions in the practice of his profession, religiously, politically, or otherwise. By his uniform and courteous conduct he endeared himself to the members of the Bar and to the various County Officials.
He was charitable toward the younger members of the Bar, always ready, willing, anxious and able to assist them in order that they might climb up the ladder to that high round upon which he stood, He was obliging in his agreements with opposite counsel, faithful to perform the same, and true to his clients.
He was a man and a citizen who was loved, honored and respected by his neighbors, and even the children in the community in which he lived.
It is with much solemnity that we present these resolutions. Therefore, be it resolved that a copy of these resolutions be presented with our sincere sympathy to the bereaved widow and children, and a copy be spread upon the Minutes of both the Chancery and Circuit Courts of Tracy City and Altamont, and a copy be published in Mrs. Grundy. J. K. P. Pearson, T. J. King, J. B. Ferguson, T. M. Lockhart, L. V. Woodlee, Walter Woodlee, Frank Rust, A. T. Bell, C. H. Garner, W. C. Abernathy, J. M. Givens, Jeff D. Fults, Fred Schwoon, Jr.
